Good Day, All

I think it is kind of a shame that more Baptist do not take church history more serious, Baptist James White does a 15 part teaching on this history.

Most if not all writings of the early church can be found here, Dr. White refers to many of these.

Why is it a shame that we do not take church history more seriously? What do I care what Origen thought? I have the scriptures why do I need anything else? I mean I don't see anything "wrong" with studying or reading church history but what is it about church history that we should be more serious about?

We study church history not because we belive that the writers views are binding on us, but it is very important to a Christian in my opinion, just as we study our country's history. We can see the emergance of the church from persecution, be inspired by what they say, how the early church dealt with heresy, etc.

God Bless

Good Day, Diakoneo

That is a good question, you do in fact have the scripture that will allow God to teach you just as the early Church did. There are things that copme up during Church history that impact the views we hold to this very day. The church overcame some very big problems in the early days and while it may be ture that we do not agree with every thing they may of said, their prospectives will help us to over come problems we see today. There is an old saying if you ignore history you are bound to repeat it.

James White does address this question much better than I do, you should give them a listen, you may find it profitable as you contend for the Faith once delievered to the Saints of days gone by.

Peace to u,

Bill

At uni (doing a history major) ive been confronted by a lot of church history that i knew nothing about! I mean everyone in our tutorials knows im a Christian and i feel embarrased because whenever something 'churchy' comes up, I am expected to be the definitive on it... This is why I am studying more church history...
