I have some familiarity with Spanish and find if I listen to high level Roman Catholics using it I understand a fair amount. I can also read it and sometimes get the gist of a sentence. I have not studied formally and would not presume to put myself forward as a translator. But I think I was generally ahead of the guy on ABC news for the papal announcement the other day.

I've picked up a few bits and pieces along the way, but I haven't made any real study of it.
Did you study of it in the seminary?

Not as such. Like I said, I couldn't help but pick up a few phrases along the way, but for languages they were focussed on us learning Greek.

I have a few resources and you can find more in two areas. Classical Christian education is a good starting point. You’ll find a lot of information in homeschooling groups that use the curriculum or design their own along those lines. Well-Trained Mind is a good resource with recommendations for beginners. Reddit has a pretty active latin community as well with a helpful thread on language. Many people start with Wheelock‘s Latin and Amazon puts the books on sale from time to time. A combination of audio and written tools is usually best. You need to determine your level of desired proficiency beforehand and whether you’re considering other languages too. Rosetta Stone has latin and several others. It’s good starting point if you have other interests language wise. I’d opt for the lifetime deal in that case.
