I'd like to correct one of the misconceptions about Catholicism in the post. Marriage is one of the Seven Sacraments of the Catholic Church and is regarded as a vocation, just as being single can be a vocation. Neither is inferior to the other.
So you say.
But I have outright heard Catholics tell me, "Singleness is superior to marriage" and they cite 1 Cor. 7 and Jesus and Paul (despite the fact he was married) as examples. I'm only telling you as I've heard. The early church fathers also had a negative view of marriage, I've read Jerome, Augustine and Tertullian. They were NOT pro-marriage, pro-women or pro-sexuality.
And this is all rooted in gnosticism, by the way. 'Spirit is good, flesh (matter) is evil, so it's best not to pollute ourselves with the sinfulness of the flesh and pursue holiness in the spirit.'
