Jimmy was the first President I voted for. His years out of the Whitehouse eclipsed the term he served.

I remember hearing the story of his blossoming career after the Navel Academy and how he left his chosen career to help his ailing father and the family business.

A man of quiet faith, who was undoubtedly one of the most notable humanitarians

I know heaven is rejoicing with one of His sons now home.

Carter was also the first president I voted for.

He was a man who lived the gospel of Jesus Christ as fully as he could, throughout his whole life.

May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

Carter was the first President where I voted for the other guy -- in my first Presidential vote. While I had issues with his policies and his presidency, he was a great man who lived his beliefs. The world is poorer for his passing.

I want to talk to you right now about a fundamental threat to American democracy.

I do not mean our political and civil liberties. They will endure. And I do not refer to the outward strength of America, a nation that is at peace tonight everywhere in the world, with unmatched economic power and military might.

The threat is nearly invisible in ordinary ways.

It is a crisis of confidence.

It is a crisis that strikes at the very heart and soul and spirit of our national will. We can see this crisis in the growing doubt about the meaning of our own lives and in the loss of a unity of purpose for our nation.

The erosion of our confidence in the future is threatening to destroy the social and the political fabric of America.

The symptoms of this crisis of the American spirit are all around us. For the first time in the history of our country a majority of our people believe that the next five years will be worse than the past five years. Two-thirds of our people do not even vote. The productivity of American workers is actually dropping, and the willingness of Americans to save for the future has fallen below that of all other people in the Western world.

As you know, there is a growing disrespect for government and for churches and for schools, the news media, and other institutions. This is not a message of happiness or reassurance, but it is the truth and it is a warning.

Jimmy Carter took on the awful Guinea worm when no one else would — and he triumphed

[After leaving office, he set his mind to combatting] diseases in far-off lands that most Americans will never suffer from and may not have even heard of. Diseases like lymphatic filariasis, trachoma, river blindness, schistosomiasis ... and a nasty little bug called Guinea worm.

When Carter got involved in Guinea worm eradication in 1986 there were 3.6 million cases. Now, nearly four decades later, that number has plummeted. Between January and early December 2024, there were just 11 human cases of Guinea worm reported worldwide. [WHO estimates the disease could be eradicated by 2030.]

Guinea worms are spread through contaminated drinking water and eating undercooked fish.

The effort to end this disease did not rely on high-tech methods. Kelly Callahan, a public health worker who spent years fighting Guinea worm disease in southern Sudan with the Carter Center, says: "Guinea worm disease has no cure, no vaccination, basically the entire eradication effort is built on behavior change."

That's meant teaching people in vulnerable areas to filter their water and giving them the low-cost tools to do so.

Guinea worm was just one of the targets of Carter's war. Onchocerciasis, also known as river blindness, has been eliminated from most of the Americas and dramatically reduced in Africa due to the work of Carter and the Carter Center.

My first Presidential election that I was able to vote in-I voted for Gerald Ford. I think Ford lost partly because people back then saw him as part of the scandal ridden Nixon regime, fairly or not. However, Jimmy Carter was a good man, a decent human being, and dignified the office of the Presidency. He was not the best President, but was honest, decent and I believe always strove to put the interests of the American people first. And his Christianity showed.

May we always remember his model of statesmanship, character, kindness and faith and grow again to recognize how necessary those qualities are in our leaders.

President Carter was a devout Christian who endeavored to follow Christ's teachings. Arguably the most successful ex-president in US history, he orchestrated numerous humanitarian efforts. His presidency had mixed results. He worked effectively with individuals of good faith who were genuinely committed to solving problems. His efforts alongside Begin and Sadat during the Camp David Accords were notable, earning him a share in the Nobel Peace Prize. However, his presidency faced significant challenges when dealing with adversarial figures, such as those in Iran. Overall, Carter was a man of integrity, and his presidency provided him with a platform to contribute positively. Regrettably, he lacked the necessary qualities to be an effective president.

An observation from Carter's presidency is that personal Christian convictions may present challenges in the role of President of the USA.

I disagree, Faith-in-Him. I think character and integrity are the most important qualities leaders--whether in government, business, or private life--must have, and Carter will go down in history precisely because he had those qualities in such abundance.

While I agree with your perspective, allow me to rephrase my thought. Success, as defined by Christian principles or in the eyes of the LORD, may differ significantly from how success is perceived in secular contexts.

President Carter's decision not to go to war or retaliate against Iranian provocations has been perceived by some Americans as a sign of weak leadership. However, from a Christian perspective, I believe it was one of the strongest decisions he ever made. It required immense strength and personal control, and it certainly held to Christian teachings.
