  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I've heard that in the Early Church, when believers were persecuted, they made this symbol at their places of worship, or made it to indicate to another Christian that they were a Christian. It was like a secret password. If a pagan saw it he would not know what it meant, he would not take any importance of it. but if a fellow Christian was traveling somewhere, and he saw this sign carved into something, he would know he was around other Christians. I also heard that if 2 people met, one might subtly draw this in the sand, if the other one recognized it, well then 2 believers could meet without saying "Hey I believe in Jesus" - which if spoken to the wrong person could get you executed.

I always thought it was a symbol of how God provides: When Jesus fed the 5000 with fish, when there were originally like three fish or something.

God Bless, metal.
Yes, I think you are right - the multiplying of the loaves and fish is the inspiration behind the early Church picking this symbol.
Could also have something to do with being "fishers of men."
