The creepy part is that they try to make them look human, which can bring about the same kind of feeling one might have as a child when seeing puppets or clowns. The idea that our toys could operate on their own without us could be a bit disturbing for some, but if androids serve a real, practical purpose then it's likely that we'll see more of these around in the future.
