In Biblical times it was common for people to use perfumes because they didn't have deodorants like we have now. We see these mentioned on occasion, even by Jesus. There were also ointments for dry skin, such as what Mary put on Christ's feet to the chagrin of her sister Martha.

This notion that Christian women must look like dowdy prairie muffins is completely unbiblical.

Some are obsessed with appearance, plastic surgery, botox and using makeup to appear unblemished as the Biblical writers favored the unblemished.

Yesterday I went to the dermatologist as I had a brown skin lesion the size of a dime growing on my forehead. I was worried about melanoma - malignant skin cancer. The doctor told me it was precancerous scale. I agreed she should freeze it off. Now I have a red brown freeze scar that should go away in time.

Peter advised against excessive investment in trying to improve your appearance.

1 Peter 3:3 (WEB) Let your beauty be not just the outward adorning of braiding the hair, and of wearing jewels of gold, or of putting on fine clothing; 4 but in the hidden person of the heart, in the incorruptible adornment of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.

If God didn’t like colors....
Gum tree sea slug on coral
houseplant polkadot plant the original color was pink

even humans come in different colors and if you’re talking about other primates , male mandrills have blue and red faces.

I always thought that Christian drab was a stupid unnatural idea

And my two cents about so called modest clothing . Long skirts are dangerous you can’t defend yourself well or run in one because they’ll wrap around your legs . Ballerinas wearing a long skirt wear costumes that are designed not to do that. Wear whatever you wish and tell mrs busybody to mind her own business

Wearing makeup in the bible is a custom only kept and practiced by the ungodly such as Jezebel and other unnamed harlots(Jeremiah 4:30, Rev 2:20-23, 1 Kings 16:31-32, 1 Kings 19:1-21, 1 Kings 18:4,13,19, 2 Kings 9:22, 29-37, Ez 23:38-46, Isaiah 3:16-24), and we are told time and time again not to adopt the practices and customs/traditions of the heathen in scripture(Leviticus 18:2-4,Jer 10:2-3,8; Deut 12:29-32, 2 Cor 6:14-17, Eph 5:6-12) always being told to keep the traditions of the Apostles and Christ(2 Thess 2:14-17;2 Thess 3:4,6;1 Cor 11:1-2) and not the traditions of men(colossians 2:8). And something is be considered is that in (Esther 2:9,12) it was not beauty treatments or makeup but rather purification treatments meant for cleansing and not in any way about beauty.
Hebrew 8562 (Tamruq)
A scrapping, Rubbing
cleanse, thing for purification
Or tamruq {tam-rook'}; or tamriyq {tam-reek'}; from maraq; properly, a scouring, i.e. Soap or perfumery for the bath; figuratively, a detergent -- X cleanse, (thing for) purification(-fying).

If a custom did not come from the Apostles and has only ever been kept by non-Christians then ask yourself where is the reason for doing it? Should we allow every heathen practice into the Church in the name of liberty in Christ? Just questions to ask yourself as you continue looking for the truth that is in Christ.

As for jewelry remember that the NT laws are not the OT laws, and while it was okay in the OT to wear jewelry the NT has it own law(law of Faith/spirit in Christ) that we are to follow out of faith. And in it we are shown that to put our ornaments/jewelry far from us(both men and women) as a way to humble ourselves before the Lord and give all glory to him(1 Peter 3:3-6, 1 Timothy 2:9-10, 1 Timothy 3:11, Titus 2:1-5) just as it was in the Old Testament(Exodus 33:3-6) but now we do it by faith(following his commands out of faith). It is true the Lord looks at our heart when we are doing anything(1 Samuel 16:17; 1 Peter 3:4), but does that mean we can sin and transgress the commands of God so long as our heart or mind is for him? If that were the case those who kill us thinking they are doing the Lord a service would be doing a good work and not an evil one(John 16:2). And remember it is not a strange and new thing to be shown how best to please God in the way that we dress for even during the time the Lord spoke to Samuel there were strict commands on how a person was to dress(Deut 22:5, 11-12). So it is not just about the heart but is both about what you are doing and your heart while you are doing it. Follow the law out of faith, and not for salvation(salvation is a free gift through Christ).
1 John 3:4
4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

Romans 14:23
23 And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.

Lastly concerning your hair, the Lord through Paul only teaches us how we are to treat the hair on our heads(1 Cor 11), since no other hair on our body is mentioned that means do with it as you please there is no law one way or another.

I hope this helps,
May God bless and Guide you into all truth Sister

ok, i wil give up the make up then and keep the rest. i do believe that New Testament is what we follow and there hav ebeen no commands added to the Bible since the cannon was closed. so i go by the NT, not htose weird "revelations" of "i saw christians in hell for x y z...." they are not Biblical at all! corsets and high heels not forbidden in the word, or perfume, or trimming your hair, like they claim... i trim my hair regularly, and wear perfume and the Lord has never once convicted me about it. i guess the issue would be if i were a vain person, thankfully that is not one of my many sins! i do have other sins which God is freeing me from, Praise His Name, but i never was one to think high of myself. am just a child of jesus made righteous by His blood alone. nothing if my own is to do with that.

bless you, brother

We are not told that other women wore make up, but how do we know they didn't? It's not mentioned and certainly not forbidden.

And something is be considered is that in (Esther 2:9,12) it was not beauty treatments or makeup but rather purification treatments meant for cleansing and not in any way about beauty.

Esther, and the other women, spent a year getting themselves clean in order to see the king?
Several translations mention perfumes and beauty treatments.

If a custom did not come from the Apostles and has only ever been kept by non-Christians then ask yourself where is the reason for doing it?

If Scripture doesn't forbid it; why not?
There are customs which Christians keep which the Apostles didn't - like the insistence that Holy Communion is only "proper" if presided over by an ordained person.

Should we allow every heathen practice into the Church in the name of liberty in Christ?

Of course not, but nail varnish and make up are not heathen. They have no moral or religious values or attributes and don't affect how we worship God.

Oh?
Are you saying I can't give glory to God while I am wearing my wedding and engagement rings, cross and chain and earrings? Or if we are going out and I wear a necklace that my husband bought me as a gift, that I am dishonouring God?

It's not a command of God that we should not wear jewellery.
If it were, then every single Christian who has exchanged rings in church on their wedding day and continues to wear them - clergy included - has sinned.

And remember it is not a strange and new thing to be shown how best to please God in the way that we dress for even during the time the Lord spoke to Samuel there were strict commands on how a person was to dress(Deut 22:5, 11-12).

In robes and sandals, you mean?

Lastly concerning your hair, the Lord through Paul only teaches us how we are to treat the hair on our heads(1 Cor 11), since no other hair on our body is mentioned that means do with it as you please there is no law one way or another.

Whether there is a law or not, we are talking about a medical condition here, not vanity.

Amen!
But please, give up wearing make up because you think you should, or want to, and not because someone else is trying to make you feel that you should.

to be honest i wear make up very rarely just for everyday appearance (of course stage make up isnt' forbidden, so that a non issue for us performers). i find it a hassle. i di used to wear it for the wrong reasons, to try and feel less "ugly" but God told me to try a season without it. i fasted it for a season and when it was over i didn;t care whether i went back to it or not...i can take or leave it.....i do sometimes wear a little powder on my greasy acne prone (another lovely gift from the metabolic disease known as PCOS) skin if i need to look very smart but am no longer fussed about my eyes, lips etc... i dont like male attention much and am a bit of a social wallflower when am not singing on stage, and unless i were looking for a husband i dont se the need to be very glam..

my obsessions are more things like nice shoes (i need a low heel, cant wear stilettos, but cant wear flats either due to a neuro muscular condition) and i do like jewellery (modest costume stuff, i cant afford expensive. i go to Primark instead or thrift stores). i also like to sometimes wear pashmina scrves just cos i like them. and i wear short sleeves or slevelss if am hot (no low cut tops or short skirts).... i dont believe women go to hell for showing their arms like some chuches claim. i mean, salvation is not to do with our bodies, eating drinking, and i guess that includes clothing. and everything in this world i sproabbly controlled by the devil and full of demons, so ni oint in living ina cave wearing hemp robes and eating berries....we can live i the world because we are not of it!

Just yesterday watching some preachers. I've notice over time how.. well allot are dressing casual? You know the preacher has holes in his pants and the women up there..singing or preacher are not dress up at all. So? Yeah.. means nothing to me. I'm 59 so back then...pfft you HAD to dress up. Not for others but for GOD Seems I've come full circle.

God does not expect us to follow how Israel or the first Church (church.. they met in homes) came together or worshiped. Worship.. yeah they didn't just stand there and sing some song lol.

We should be going for Him. Not for others. So.. want to ware make up, jewelry.. or you don't who cares? The word is clear on.. were not here to please man. You go for HIM. Its HIM your pleasing. And.. I am sure if it bothered Him so much He would tell you Were going home soon and were going to find we worried thought about things that mean NOTHING. Things we should never have put so much thought into.

I could not tell you in all the years I've went to Church.. talked, taught you name it.. where I even cared or sorry noticed any woman that didn't have make up. You do notice when theres TO much lol. Or dresses.. in the end.. didn't care. They were not there for me.

amen! yeah, definitely the shaving thing (and the need to wear low heels) are medical. i cannot change the body i been given.

you certianly can give glory to God when you worship because we are now the righteousness of Christ, i believe every time we come to Him, He sees us as His son, made righteous... so i think God will still accept us if we wear jewels, make up etc

being accepted by God is conditional on whether we have recieved His son Jesus or not. obedience is still neccessary of course but we still approach God even when we are not perfect. if we onky come to God when we good He cannot help us.

1. Makeup in the bible is a practice only ever said to be done by the ungodly(as I have shown in scripture), it is their tradition. Now we know that Paul and the Apostles fully preached the doctrine and traditions of Christ, so if a known heathen custom(at the Apostles time) such as this, were now allowed it would then have been stated in scripture. So i ask for you to show proof from God's word that this Pagan Practice was kept by the people of God. If you cannot then there is only condemnation of the practice(and those who keep it) and not acceptance or allowance for it.

2. They spent a year being purified as the definition of the word states. Part of that purification is cleansing, but no part of it was about beautification or outward adornment for the pleasing of man.

3. The Apostles fully preached the doctrine and traditions of Christ, if they did not say that we should do it then we should not. That people think to change or add to their traditions does not mean they are right in doing so. Scripture forbids keeping the customs and traditions of the heathen and ungodly clearly and with all certainty. Did the ungodly keep it as their own tradition or practice? Then the Godly do not, we have our own set of traditions, culture, and customs we are a nation separate from the nation of the world. We are a light among the darkness, though we dwell in a crooked and perverse nation we still show forth the customs given by the Lord and the Light of his true and perfect way.

4. They do though, it was the Pagans who came up with these practices. We are the temple of the holy spirit created in the image of God, did the ancient Hebrews paint the holy of Holies to suit their own aesthetic desires? We dishonor the Holy spirits temple in doing these things, we do not show forth the Love of God in these actions, we only give heed to the traditions of men that lead to perdition. We should not even have the Appearance of evil(1 Thess 5:22) but show the truth of God in every action and praise his handiwork in fashioning us in the manner he saw fit.

5. It gives no honor to the Lord to transgress his commands. If you love God you will keep his commandments. Again you cannot work iniquity thinking you are doing the Lord a service and expect a reward or praise from the Lord in the end. You cannot praise him with your lips but be in every work reprobate(1 John 2:3-6), the Lord will judge us by our deeds in the end according to his law(Romans 2:5-11,16).

6. It is a command of God that we should not wear Jewelry((1 Peter 3:3-6, 1 Timothy 2:9-10, 1 Timothy 3:11, Titus 2:1-5), that there is a multitude of people that practice and keep this tradition(and thereby sin) does not make it right. Remember straight and narrow is the way, and not many thereby will find it(Matt 7:13-14) but there will be many who sought the Lord by their own means but the Lord will cast them into the Lake of Fire(Matt 7:21-23) for even the righteous shall scarcely be saved( 1 Peter 4:18-19).

7. Yes, a strict code of dress for both mean and women. God has always shown us his way, we need only look to his word to find it.

8. As I pointed out Sister, there is no law on how we are to treat the rest of our body hair. Just the hair on our heads.

As this is not a place for argument I will stop the discussion here, but if you would like to discuss this further over private message or in different section of this site I would be happy to continue speaking with you.

May the Light and truth of the Lord be upon you.

When I say strict I mean that there is no wiggle room, it says what it means and that is it. I don't mean it as there are many but that the ones that we have cannot be changed altered or moved in any way.

I am happy that I could help Sister, I pray the Lord continues to lead you further down the Path of righteousness and helps to perfect you according to his will(1 Thess 3:6)
