Is TV a waste of time?

I'm sure most of you will answer NO, considering you are hanging out in this forum.

i always watched tv... i used to keep up with survivor, american idol, extreme makeovers (& home edition), alias, etc.

but i have friends who don't have tv's and their houses seem so much more relaxed. I know watching tv is a choice, but i live in a family with 5 other people who all like the tv, and they like different things, so the tv is always on. I wish i could cancel the cable, because i wish we did something more productive. it's always on.... everynight, my parents watch the news or the late show... so the tv is on until 12-12:30.

does anyone know what i mean?

TV can be a waste of time, sure, if you watch it too much. But that can go for anything else; internet, games, movies, whatever. The point is to do things in moderation.

I kinda get what you're saying.
I'm not a huge TV person myself. I watch the news, but I also read the newspapers, so I can cut that out. And before it was cancelled, the only show I ever really watched was Buffy. And, well, it's over now.. *tear*

TV can be okay, but in moderation. Some people just let life pass them by, living through the people they see in the idoit box as opposed to experiencing the real world. I suppose you just have to know when to draw the little ol'line.

Or, just cut that cable wire and never look back!

too much...yeah.
but honestly, you can learn a lot from certain tv shows. and i'm not talking about education. you can watch certain shows, learn what's going on in the world, and grow. take what you see, sort it out, and analyze it. wisdom can be found in the strangest places.
you shouldn't depend on it too much; but you should have your own thoughts. but tv isn't a waste of time.

watching all day...and have your brains sucked out by it is pointless. using it to raise your child, or to learn how to live is pointless. it depends on how you use what you watch.

I agree totally, kittie What people don't realize sometimes in their zeal to give up entertainment (especially when they think it's "evil") is that there can still be truth to be found there.

Tv is a waste of time when you got something to do. Or when you spend 8 hours a day watching it. Like already stated,

Most of TV is garbage....I'll say it up front. I just have a handful of shows I watch.

I know I can always think of better things to be doing than watching TV.

Waste of time?...yeah.

Just my opinion. Take it for what its worth.

Actually what i don't like Reality show personally I haven't seen episode of American Idol or Survivor or anything like that

Only show I did watch was Osbournes first season that is

I think that TV produces ADD/ADHD and teaches kids not to like reading. I mean think about it. Why would you want to work at reading a bunch of static words when you can click a button, not work at reading any words, AND have nifty annimations to distract you.

Lately I've seriously cut down on my TV time. Maybe an hour to an hour and a half each day. I actually haven't watched TV for the last 2 days and it's been great. I've been doing my homework, reading, and just hanging out with my friends.

Has anyone here read Brave New World? Television seems awefully like soma to me.

Wow! When I lived in Portugal they showed Brazilian soap opera's all the time! Not much of a soap opera fan, but I must admit, they were real easy to get addicted to. The last Brazilian soap I watched when I lived there (keep in mind, it's been 17 years since I left Portugal) was Corpo a Corpo.

The few shows I went out of my way to watch (Buffy, X-Files) are gone/over and if the TV is on in my room, chances are good it's only for background noise as I'm either at the sewing machine, reading or stitching (needlepoint). Otherwise, unless an ad for a show catches my attention, I just don't bother to focus on it much.

I think the longest I actually watched TV last night was to catch the trailer for the new movie, The Village.

I used to watch a lot of Tv for my favorite shows and cartoons. Now I don't watch that much anymore and all the good shows are off the air and I just go on the internet mostly or read and play my GameCube mostly.

When I was in college, for 3 of my 4 years all I had were 3 channels, and 2 of them came in fuzzy. So I never watched TV. Now, if I watch too much TV, I get a headache. Its just sitting there, watching. At least with other things you are actually doing something. With TV, you do nothing. Most of the time. There are some educational shows, but they do most of the thinking for you. I am so glad I got out of the habit of watching so much TV. I feel like my brain was given an opportunity to exercise more.

I rarely watch TV during the day except on the weekends for golf tournament. At night, I turned it on, turned the timer on for 60 minutes and surf my favorite channels.

I think it's a waste of time if that's all you do all day.

You guys must teach me a lesson or two because I watch way, way, too much and need to not watch that much at all. With the exception of Survivor and CSI shows with NFL in the fall/winter and the cable news channels, tv is garbage.

Bad news: Like soaps and sitcoms in the 80's, dramas and talk shows of the 90's, the 21st century will have more reality shows than ever since that is the norm these days.

I like to watch the news. And, I enjoy some shows, like STAR TREK:ENTERPRISE. But most of the time, the TV is off, or I'm using it to watch a DVD or play my GAME CUBE.

Frankly, I wish for the old days, sometimes, when you only had 13 channels to choose from, and life was simpler...

Okay, old fart mode off. Now, where is that remote?
