Is this blasphemous?

So, basically, my friend and I are super close. Like, we've known each other since first grade. We are both Christian, and enjoy quick Bible studies, often over lunch. And, one day, we decided to eat at Panera. If you aren't familiar with the place, just know that most of the items on the menu either come with bread on the side or are in between bread. So we both hauled our Bibles over to Panera and got some food. I don't remember the exacts of what either of us ordered, but those are irrelevant to the story. Whatever I ordered came with a side bread, which my friend really wanted a portion of, so we agreed to split it. As I split the bread, I jokingly said 'this is my body' as a reference to Jesus' famous line to get in the mood for, you know, studying Jesus. He looked a little caught off-guard, but laughed and took the bread. I don't think he was offended by any means, and it may just have been he didn't hear, but the thought's been sticking with me since. Was I blasphemous? I'd appreciate if someone could tell me and, if so, what I can do better next time.

The bible tells us that God looks at our hearts, so you need, I believe, to think what was in your heart when you said the words about the bread. What was your reason for saying it? If it was deliberately to imitate or poke fun at the institution of the Lord's Supper, then it probably was blasphemous. Personally, whatever your reason for saying the words, I would think them unwise. You say that you don't think your friend was offended, but other people in the restaurant may have misunderstood.

Maybe but it was a slip of the tongue thing rather than intended irreverence. I'm sure the Lord understands that.

In church we discuss how bread is a good 'starting point' to talking about the Lord. 'Jesus is the Bread of Life!" I think this was done in a similar manner. We also have some freedom in Christ, it's good to be passionate about it.

To blaspheme is to declare something good as bad.

It does not sound like you were making a declaration, but rather a low level mockery. Some think of communion as a sacrament and some others think of it as an ordinance. Still others think that what Paul wrote the Corinthians was simply an admonition against using their common meals as an event similar to pagan feasting with which they were familiar.

You might want to be a bit more sensitive to how others might take your jesting.

I'd add that if your friend was a protestant Christian and not Catholic, you'd also have him feeling very uncomfortable with the transubstantiation issue. I agree with the others that it's a thing best not to repeat but not worth frettin' over any further. We all say questionable or stupid things too often, and personally I don't seem to get much better with age no matter how hard I try.

It is your intentions that matters. You did not intend it negative.
