• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I have a bad habit of biting the sides of my fingers when I'm frustrated

I work in food services, and I have been permanently pulled from busing tables as a direct result of this habit, and I am having a hard time dealing with it.

Is there a medical name for this condition that I am not aware of?

It seems that lots of people have similar habits--biting their nails down to the quick, chewing their hair, biting the lining of their mouths, etc.

I doubt that such habits are indicative of anything terribly serious, but I can see that working in the food industry is likely to be a problem. Still, I am surprised that you can't muster the self-discipline to not do it while at work. Or are you in trouble with management because of the look of your fingers now, rather than because you've been seen with them in your mouth?

I don't know but a quick search yielded this:

Dermatophagia (from Ancient Greek δέρμα - skin - and φαγεία - eating) is a compulsion of gnawing or eating one's own skin, most commonly at the fingers. Sufferers typically bite the skin around the nails, leading to bleeding and discoloration over time. Some may consume the flesh during an episode. Contemporary research suggests a link between impulse control disorders and obsessive–compulsive disorders. (Dermatophagia, Wikipedia)

Whatever it is, your probably not the first.

Grace and peace,
Mark
