Jesus paid for all sin, even for those who don't believe.
1 John 2:2 He paid for our sins with His own blood. He did not pay for ours only, but for the sins of the whole world.
Sin, as far as God goes, is a done deal but there is still a wage that is paid by sin itself and that wage is death. This death is not imposed by God, but rather, it's intrinsic to sin. The warning we get from God, regarding sin, is how it hardens the heart towards God.
Hebrews 3:13 but exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,” lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
When we sin, we are acting outside of a God's image. This brings about guilt and condemnation but this guilt and condemnation is not coming from God.
Romans 8:32-34 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.
Guilt and condemnation from sin brings hardness of the heart and death. When God forgives us and cleanses us from all the effects of sin and unrighteousness it's not God changing His mind or feelings towards us, but rather, forgiveness is something we need to believe and experience within us. God has already forgiven us through Christ but we need to believe it so we don't experience the guilt and condemnation when we fall which leads to hardness of heart and death.
Proverbs 8:36-3 But he who sins against me wrongs his own soul; all those who hate me love death.”
It's all about believing God.
Romans 5:20-21 Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more, so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
If we don't believe God and continue to hold on to the condemnation and guilt from sin the wage will kill us in the presence and full revelation of God's glory.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
