Is it ok to watch the simpsons?

Christian music and poetry are trite, predictable, and are spiritual milk. There is very little substance in them. Very rarely am I challenged or built up by reading or listening to them. If you can get something out of them, then by all means, do so, but I find myself disgusted by the state of christian art nowadays.

There is serious Christian art, but... It doesn't sell as well. But some of it's pretty good.

Still... I can't listen to "Christian" radio stations. I guess that kind of material was pretty cool when I was young enough that clapping in time with the music was a challenge.

I understand that there are some real artists. But they are few and far between. I was getting at the fact that the music that christians promote as "good music" is spiritual milk. I suspect that John812 and others believe that secular music is wrong too. I think this is a pretty shallow view of God and his gift of art. Do you think God is at all offended when you say that He is sovereign in all areas except for in music, art, and television? Doesn't really sound like sovereignty to me.

With certain issues it is important for Christians to take a stand and show their brother where they are sinning. This is not one of those issues, unless of course, you have been watching me and have seen me sin as a result of watching the Simpsons.

I think that there are terrible implications when some of the ideas presented here are taken to their logical extreme. If one cannot find glimpses of God or find God glorified on any TV that is not "christian programming", then similarly, God has no place in music, literature, or art. This would also mean that God does not concern himself with other common things that are not part of the church. Again, I think that is a limited view of His sovereignty.

God is sovereign over all. However, the devil has a certain amount of power granted to him by God. Much of the evil (if not all of it?) is a direct result of the devil's and his demons influence in this world, and in my opinion, this includes many t.v. shows. However, in the end, God will prevail over the forces of darkness.

Do you even realize the implications of what you are saying?

Sovereignty is supreme, authoritative power. Show me scriptural proof that the devil has sovereignty over anything. If I'm not mistaken, Satan even had to ask permission from God in order to tempt Job. God is sovereign over everything; Satan can only twist and pervert that which God gives. There is nothing outside of God's control --no, not even television cannot twart his power.

This is so American, arguing about whether or not it's "sinful" to watch The Simpsons.

No wonder a lot of people would rather die before becoming christians.

If God Himself is unable to guide people as to what to watch on TV, I sure as hell am not going to take that job.

My job isn't to point people away from The Simpsons, but to Jesus. He will teach them everything they need to know. I've felt the Spirit nudge me to get rid of certain things in my life, I started feeling like "I don't like this anymore, it's not good for me." God I can trust.
But when I started listening to preachers telling me what belonged and did not belong in my life, I ended up burning almost my entire music collection in a fit of misunderstood spirituality. That's what men's commandments will do to you.

I will NOT leave it to another person to determine what I watch, eat, read, or listen to. God is perfectly capable of doing that Himself, and He does it in a nice way.
