Is it hypocritical to be a YEC and still take for granted the benefits of science?

It is remarkable to me that creationists never seem to consider that the same "atheist conspiracy" that gave rise to evolution also produced the computers and internet that they use to rail against it. The medical science that keeps them healthy is based on the same biology that holds "evilution" as its core principle. The geologic science that finds oil and mines metals tells us of the age of the earth and a history of change over that time. food is safe to eat because it is preserved and packaged to prevent the growth of potentially harmful bacteria, a concept unknown without science. water is free of hazardous chemicals and microorganisms, something that has helped more than double the average human lifespan.

How can you be against concepts so central to science as evolution and billions of years of history and yet take advantage of the fruits of the very science that let you live as long and with the quality of life we have? Isnt that hypocritical?

It is funny... they will take all the advances made with science (the understanding of the atom, electronics, biology, medication etc) and say "Yes, this is good - science know what they are doing, give me another computer and some drugs to make this illness go away"

Yet when science comes against their reading of "the good book" - then science is evil and do not know anything.

Basically, I think they have a little filter in their heads for such things.

They will not accept evolution, but will accept the drugs that are made with the knowledge that comes from evolution theory.

When I think about medical science your signature pretty much sums it up CactusJack. We'd understand far, far less if evolutionary theory hadn't been developed.

I think that the problem with a lot of YECs is that they see the sole purpose of evolutionary theory as being to undermine the Christian faith. Maybe we should create a list of medical advances that were developed in the last 100 years. We could then cross off all the ones in which evolutionary biology played some kind of role in research and development. Maybe then a Young Earther or two could see the good it's done.

Yes, it is hypocritical. Science is all well and good when it helps me, but once it starts to suggest that my beliefs might be wrong, it's bad and wrong and not to be trusted under any circumstances, no matter how much evidence there is.

even though you reject evolution, this doesn't change the fact that it exists.

Just because you don't believe that a medicine can save your life, doesn't mean it can't. And unless you made your computer yourself, your statement is even more flawed.

Evolution have had plenty chances of being falsified, it is one of the single most supported theories within the scientific world - It has more evidence to support it than the theory of gravity. Really, don't count on it being shown as fault science any time soon - If ever.

To the point though, a lot of medicines were created on the basis that theory of evolution is right, they, in short, would never have been made if we still ran around thinking a magic man popped everything into existence.

Actually, since the chips in your PC were probably designed by an evolutionary algorithm based on observations of biological evolution, without evolution, your PC probably would not work. You are wrong.

I voted 'No' for one simple reason, creationists did not choose to be creationists they were made into creationists when they were very young.

It could be argued that although the above may well be true they are old enough now to see how illogical creationism is and sort themselves out, but we can all see what religion has done to many many people here so it's obviously not that easy to get away from creationism, don't forget, they have been convinced it's all true by experts who also believe it.

So no I don't think they are hypocrites for taking for granted the benefits of science any more than they should be held responsible for the language they speak.

ALL of the material that makes up both the PC and the Internet are the results of science. For instance, the geology to locate the material used is of a very old earth perspective.

That's an impressively ego-centric statement. I'm sorry to inform you, but the only thing your statement proves is that reality doesn't prostrate itself to your will.

The argument wasn't that your belief or disbelief in science warps reality to make devices based on that science suddenly stop working, the argument was that you're part of the problem damaging technological advance and improvements in the human condition but take advantage of all those benefits produced by that which you deny.

FYI, my pc and the Internet aren't run by evolution; and if you're implying that we can't enjoy what creature comforts scientists, who are one of God's gifts to mankind, give us without embracing evolution -- or we're hypocrites -- then consider me a hypocrite.
