  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Not sure what you mean but I believe interacting with people in any setting is akin to going to church in that we learn about God, and our relationship to Him, by how we deal with the things we encounter.  While attending church might be viewed as more specific training in His Word, learning to respond to a difficult situation or person with a godly motive and response is the implementation of what you learn from His Word and is, therefore, just as valuable.

I am a small group leader, we meet every week for study and fellowship. But we also all attend Sunday worship service. Our church has about 90% participation in small groups. The small group leaders meet on Sunday morning to discuss issues within the groups and to provide resources for the group ministries. All ministry programs are handled within the small group structure. This is called a "cell church".

I believe this model fits well with the early church. There is accountability, true friendships and a sense of family that comes from the smaller groups.

The other benifit is that Sunday worship is a time of praise as all the growth comes from within the groups.

It's comming to a church near you, check it out.

We are to give our bodies as a living sacrifice (Romans 12:1). This is worship. The rocks out worship us, they are dedicated to one purpose, to reveal the glory of God. While I never miss a Sunday service, it's my life that is worship, not a service.

I think as long as the Bible study focuses on the Bible and worshipping God, then it is church. Dictionary.com defines church as:

church ( P ) Pronunciation Key (chûrch)
n
1. A building for public, especially Christian worship.

2. often Church
a. The company of all Christians regarded as a spiritual body.
b. A specified Christian denomination: the Presbyterian Church.
c. A congregation.

In the Bible, "the church" is most often referred to in the context of a body of believers, not as a building, or a specific service structure. And Jesus himself says "wherever two or three are gathered in my name, there am I with them." (Matthew 18:20 NIV)

It seems to me that if "church" is the company of all Christians regarded as a spiritual body, and Jesus is in the midst of any gathering in His name, then any time spent as a group focusing on God and drawing nearer to Him is church.

Why not do both?

Getting involved in a bible study is a way for me to expand my knowledge and understanding of God.

Going to church allows me to worship the Lord amongst fellow believers and gets me involved in our "community".  I learn a lot from our pastor, and find his sermons very enlightening.  But even he says not to come just to church on Sundays and crack open your bible one day a week.  Get enmeshed in the Word.....

Do both.

I agree with dewjunkie, but i am going to add my own opinion.

You asked if Bible study is the same as having church. Yes, and no. For the most part the answer is no. I doubt that there will ever be a time when you will do the Lord Supper during Bible study, or have a baptism, and probably there will not be any worship songs during Bible study. There is alot more to church than studying your Bible.

Bible study allows you to get deeper into God's word to know more about God. I realize that you will have prayer time, but typically prayer times i have seen during bible study have not become very deep. They are more a asking God to help you know more about him or praying for others. Neither of these are wrong. But there is not the deep devotion level that can be done during a true church service.
