US-Democrat

For the past two weeks, Biden administration officials were confident that they had finally secured a deal to release more than a dozen journalists, pro-democracy activists and wrongfully detained Americans from Russian prisons.
The negotiations had been painstaking and sometimes faltering. But now, 16 people were on the verge of freedom, among them Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, serving a harsh sentence on baseless accusations of spying; Washington Post contributor Vladimir Kara-Murza, among the most outspoken and trenchant critics of Russian President Vladimir Putin; and Paul Whelan, a former Marine who had languished in Russian prisons for more than five years on trumped-up charges.
Officials in Washington who had helped craft the deal were buoyant as the Americans boarded a plane in Moscow, joined by a group of jailed Russian pro-democracy activists who would travel on to Germany. But until they touched down at an airport in Ankara, Turkey, and their heads were counted, their identities were verified, and they were physically out of Russian custody, U.S. officials kept their fingers crossed and remained, as several recalled, “on pins and needles.”

Woo, this is awesome. I am glad that these prisoners are finally free from the hold of the Kremlin.

Quote from the BBC: "Many of the prisoners feared for their health and even their lives," German Chancellor Olaf Scholz added after meeting with some prisoners on their arrival at Cologne Bonn Airport.

From the BBC:

Thank God they've been released.
Amen to this. The Kremlin is very worldly (as in corrupt), but as the Bible says, God can defeat the world. I am not sure if any of the released folks are Christian or not, but if these folks are, they can rejoice in the words of John 16:33.

John 16:33 (NIV): "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

I'm sure many people were praying for this for a long time. I'm sure His Spirit was with those who worked so hard to make it happen.

Amen to this. To be honest, I was not following the news, as the news has gotten really dark lately, so I am glad that positive news still exists. Do you think that the Kremlin is one of the most worldly institutions? I do think that the Russian government is totally of this world, as it does not seem to honor the rights of other nationalities, or even the rights of their own citizens.

A rare W for the Biden administration....swapping Griner for a top spy/war criminal while leaving the marine in Russia has long been seen as a bad deal.

It's great they were finally able to get him and the rest of the prisoners out without having to trade any dangerous Russian operatives back.

I think Putin, a handful of oligarchs, and the Russian mafia are the main problem with Russia.

Agreed. We should pray that Putin, the oligarchs and the mafia change their ways, and drop their greed to focus on bettering society, instead of tearing it down. Praying for our enemies to repent would be a good idea for us all. I know a Russian guy at work who left Russia in the 2000s for better opportunities in the USA. He does not like Putin either, and said to me that quote "Russia sucks".

There was an article in the Atlantic which explained the implications of this sudden prisoner exchange deal

in short: Putin now believes Kamala Harris will win the presidency, and is trying to court favor with her and Biden

That sounds far-fetched. A likelier scenario is that as the Special Military operation is winding down, Russia and the USA are looking to smooth over their strained relations.
If that's the case, look forward to the USA pulling Zelenski by the ear and dragging him to the negotiating table.

If this is the case do you think Belarus would make comments about Biden?

not sure why he would say that

but if Putin thought Trump was going to win, he would have held the prisoners back until after Trump took office. Then the exchange could be used to generate some favorability toward Russia

Or maybe Putin realized Trump would never be able to convince Germany and Solvenia to cough up their convicted Russian criminals.
