Any other Catholics here who really don't care for the sound of them?

Maybe it is because I have hearing issues- but the sound of organs 'blarring' and the loud, inaudible singing of the people following just doesn't to do it for me. I can't quite associate it with sacred worship, I guess.

I love Gregorian chant because even if i can't follow the words, I can follow the pattern of the signing, if that makes sense.

I'm just curious what you all's preference is? Do people really like pipe organs? I would think so, because they seem so popular. I just don't get it

I like Gregorian Chant a capella the best, but I also like the organ, I think it is a very majestic instrument and when used with a good choir (which is not drowned out) is very powerful.

Do you have issues with te organ when played so loud it does drown out the choir? Maybe that's my issue, I can't quite hear them.

Yes, I think that would be a problem.

I love pipe organs, but then my favorite place as a kid was Organ Powered Pizza (San Diego, Ca). Imagine a building the size of supermarket that is actually one big pipe organ. Combine it with pizza and you have one of my fondest memories.

Of all instruments I definetely prefer the pipe organ. A capella chant is beautiful and has a long tradition in the church, but it requires people to be really able to sing. I also like modest singing of hymns without any instruments. The harp was the only intrument (together with the organ) permitted for church worship for a long time. I think it could sound very nice. Something different than those ole guitars which I don't really like inside the church.

We used to have one of those in southern Michigan too, when I was younger...It was called Pizza and Pipes or Pipes and Pizza something like that! I had a few birthday parties there, it was really a lot of fun! Wow, I forgot all about that, thanks for reminding me!!

Organ music always reminded me of a funeral dirge. They can take an otherwise pretty melody and make it sound depressing.

I played Sr. Margaretta in the "Sound of Music" just a couple of years ago and we had to chant A capella, it does sound beautiful...but then again, we were all trained to do this and we were in a playhouse. It's not as easy as I originally thought it would be.

I think the harp and the pipe organ would sound amazing together!! I love all instruments and have heard them all played in church at one time or another...well, I've never heard a banjo played in church...I don't think I want to either though...but I do like them. We even had a group from Switzerland (I believe) once with those big long horns play at our church, that was awesome!! Except my oldest son, was only about 3 at the time, they played during the Our Father and when it was done, he sings out: Ricolla! (Remember that comercial for the cough drops??) And of course we always sat in the front pew, so everyone heard him! Everyone was trying not to laugh though!

Awful things. Usually played too loud and too slow.

Actually one of the things I most appericated about Orthodoxy was the lack of all musical instruments save for those given by God Himself.

Pipe organs can be lovely, if played with the correct skill. I think the problem tends to be the fact that not every parish is going to have someone with that level of musical talent.

They are also the reason I like the Tridentine Mass too.

I just don't like them, unless they are really turned down, which they never are.

Hello,

Although I don’t sing very well I do love acapella music. I do love organ music tho. I have just become my church’s organist and I try very hard to lead the people in worship and not drown them out. But I never got to play the church’s organ until a few weeks ago and it’s very powerful and I’m still learning and making mistakes. The very first time I played for an actual service I got confused . . . my home organ only has one volume pedal and the church organ has three, and during the service offeratory I pressed down on the wrong pedal. I thought the building was going to explode! :o But if any of you can give me suggestions for making my music good and not bad please let me know ‘cause I’m still learning and need help. Thank you!

After last Sunday Mass, I realized without a hymn to read, I don't think I could understand most of what people are saying. I think I'll try to avoid pipe-organ Norvus Ordo from now on because it isn't doing it for me. I don't understand the appeal of it really. Ar the words of the hymns moving? The blarring pipe organ? *shrug*
