• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I just quit today and have had the patch on for almost 4 hours. My priest told me to pray for the power of Jesus to quit. After Mass I had 1 cigarrettte and went straight to the local drugstore, threw out my cigarettes and lighter. Went into the store purchased the patch and a big bag of hard candy. I am relying on God and pray for His holy strength to help me quit once and for all. I have been smoking for 20yrs.

God bless,

My doctor perscribed Zyban for me and I was able to quit. Today is my anniversary, nine years smoke free! I was a three pack a day smoker, and you can quit too. I'll be praying for you

I quit the day after Christmas (13 days now) and I've been on Wellbutrin for depression since October. I told my doctor I was trying to quit before the holidays, and he said this would help, but I figured it would just give me a little more self-control. I'm just now finding out it is a smoking-cessation drug marketed as Zyban. You can't argue that it works. This has been a much easier quit than in the past when I've tried before. The most I'd lasted was four days and never lasted a full day when I went back to work. Being in different places over the holidays where I couldn't smoke helped me realize I can distract myself and not need to smoke. I usually didn't smoke three packs a day, but I could. Before the smoking ban if I were to go out to a bar I would smoke a whole pack there. If I had a long road trip I could easily reach 3 packs, but normally I smoked just over one. On school nights when I was up later I'd smoke a lot more.

To the OP, instead of the hard candy, which will be bad for your teeth, try a bottle of water. I have one of those Brita filter bottles and in my car it has almost become my crutch as you have to suck on them rather hard and it mimics the motions of a cigarette. I've heard acidic fruits and juices also help, but I can't testify to their effectiveness. I've always drank orange juice and took apples to work for snacks.
