I was looking through some of the threads in here and I saw something that confuses me. Somebody (can't remember who) said "and we know birth control is wrong".....how is it wrong? Is there scripture to back this up? I had heard before that there were people that believed this but it was never explained to me why.

There are some church traditions which say that birth control is wrong. One of the verses used to support this is the verse in Genesis where God says to Adam and Eve to be fruitful and multiply. There is also a verse in Genesis about a man who intentionally spilled his seed upon the ground as a way to avoid making his wife pregnant. The Lord was angry with the man.

I think in a more general way, children are considered a gift from God. Trying to avoid having children is seen as avoiding one of the responsibilities that goes along with marriage. To be fruitful and multiply.

For someone in those traditions , birth control is seen as a sin.

1. Some people believe we're made to "pro-create" (be fruitful and multiply as Yitzchak stated) so we most have babies, and lots of them, even we can't emotional or financially support them.

2. There are people that believe that some kinds of birth control cause abortions. Funny, I know people who actually have gotten pregnant on the pill...

I'm sure there's more but I can't think of them right now.

BTW - I don't believe there's anything wrong with birth control. I would much rather see someone using it then to have an "unexpected" pregnancy, and therefore a child that isn't wanted.

Just needed to comment on this. I agree mostly. I don't believe that bc is a sin either. However, I highly disagree that a surprise pregnancy means an unwanted pregnancy. Maybe for some married couples that is true, but not all, and I'd venture to say, not even most.

Wrong choice of words on my part I guess.... Not all surprise pregnancies=unwanted children. Sorry if that wasn't clear in my OP.

I would have to agree with that. I am taking the pill and it has been effective so far but I know if God wants me to have another before I decide to, then he will override any little pill and give me a little bundle of joy

I can't find the verse you are talking about. If I remember correctly though, it was the man's brother's wife. And his brother had died so it was his responsibility to provide her with a child (to carry on the name I think?) He decided not to do that, and that's why God was angry with him.
I don't really see that as a verse against birth control though.

Ah - now this one I know a bit about - need to find a book though, but no time for that now, so will go from memory. Some kinds of pill allow the egg to be fertilized but then cause the egg to not go ahead, and as such 'cause' abortion. So it is in effect putting an end to that 'life'. I am morally opposed to such forms of the pill, and don't take them. I am not on the pill anyway, but if I were it would be the type that doesn't do that. I think it is something worth checking out if you are on the pill though.

It is a matter of science. For too long science has been allowed a free reign in some areas, and I know in Australia we are now fighting back, and having a say in the ethics of this area in particular. It all links into abortion, the stem cell debate, cloning, etc, etc. We had a bioethicist, who is also a christian come and speak to a group of women and it was a real eye opener for me. I would encourage every woman (and man for that matter) to become aware of things like the pill, IVF practices, abortion rates etc. What has often started as something kind of sensible has then been abused, and nothing has really been done to stop it.

Anyway - I imagine I will probably be told this is not the place for this kind of discussion - I only want to urge you to look into it - what decision you come to is something for you to work through, and I am not looking for an argument.

Hope my facts aren't too far off.

I wanted to comment also,I was on the pill before our first child, when we first married. We were not ready for children yet,so we wanted protection. I do not and have not ever read it anywhere that it is a sin. Why would it be a sin? can someone clear up my confusion also with a scripture!!
