• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I’m so scared of getting corona. I keep washing my hands so often that my hands are dry and have little bloody cuts. So this morning I had bleeding cuts on my hand so I decided not to wash my hands directly after going to the bathroom because it hurted. I thought I will wash it later so they can rest a bit. I know gross, but my hands were hurting. Then I accidentally touched my tooth with my finger. Now I’m scared of getting corona, because I’ve touch my mouth with unwashed hands. These kinds of situation happened to me all the time. Always touching my face accidentally and realised I haven’t washed my hands. I really hate living in this time and feel hopeless. And my OCD and anxiety disorder makes it worse. Will I have corona now? I’m so scared!

Please talk to your therapist for some advice.

My advice would be to wash your hands after going to the toilet, before handling uncooked food and on returning to your house.
While in the house you have no need to wash your hands other than for these reasons.

You will not catch Corona from touching your teeth.
Get some hand cream to rehidrate your skin.

New coronavirus research says that hand contamination ... is NOT A BIG RISK.

Most serious cases of COVID come by BREATHING IN virus particles.

Ease up on the hand-washing. A couple times a day is probably enough.

Hope that helps ...

I agree with John . Washing your hands when returning to the house . Wearing a mask, wearing fresh clothing daily , carrying hand sanitizer when you go outside . If you can get it, spray outer clothing and shoes with Lysol or keep them completely away from your bedroom bathroom and kitchen. If you can, let them air out outside away from everything for a while, or spray with Lysol. I live in NYC and I’m an essential health worker.

being afraid of this is reasonable. Panicking to the point of hurting yourself is not.

Remember that there is no need to wash your hands if you don't go anywhere only if you get them dirty while in your house. then if you go out wear gloves and wash your gloves and hands when you get home. After you put your buys away wash them again. Then you will be okay.
I use those rubber gloves for dish washing that the grocery stores sale and I feel protected with my mask and gloves. the only thing I don't like is those gloves do not work with cell phones so you have to take them off to use the phone kind of defeats the purpose.Anyway, I haven't been affected yet following that procedure. Try not to worry, put your trust in God, he doesn't want you to be fearful. Hand sanitizer, gloves, mask and lotion and you are all set.
God bless.

I don't care what another poster told you or what the world keeps pushing on you (and me), fear is not a reasonable response at all, especially for a believer.

Is God your God, or is He not? Isn't He the one who told us to fear not over and over, to cast our cares upon Him? Why don't you let Him be in charge of this for a while. You're scared only because you are allowing yourself to be scared. Not only is your fear in itself unhealthy, it's also completely unnecessary.

Hey. Some people posting may not have OCD and may not realize the intense fear it causes far beyond normal fear. I know it's hard but the OCD does make it worse. You may very well not get it and even if you do God Himself is in control! I walked into a little tiny Dollar General a few days ago without my mask. I completely forgot. Then I forgot and walked into Wal-mart without it. Luckily I had one in my purse and put it on quickly but I had already walked in. There are so many times that I've worried about touching my mouth. It bothers me so when someone says - Well, just don't touch your mouth. With OCD I can just think I touched my mouth without being sure. We're all going thru this together so does it help knowing you're not alone? I was able to let it go and not worry about it.

I understand - I've had a hard time with my germ obsession during this virus too! However, reasonable caution is a lot different from obsessing. I think we can often sense the difference. So, the goal is to do what's reasonable, but to force ourselves to stop if we're being compulsive. The way we think when we're obsessing is WAY more hyper-analytical than a "normal" view of things. So we can often "see" germs even where there are likely none, which causes us to be way more vigilant about cleaning than we need to be. What are some steps/goals you could take to work on cutting down your compulsions?

You're scared only because you are allowing yourself to be scared. Not only is your fear in itself unhealthy, it's also completely unnecessary.

Humans are hardwired to feel fear. It's a natural emotion that God gave us, and we can't fully control it. Please don't put people down for feeling natural human emotions. You can be afraid and still trust in God, and claiming otherwise puts unnecessary condemnation on people. OCD is caused by a brain disorder, it causes irrational fear. Telling a person with OCD that they are allowing themselves to be scared is like telling an asthmatic that they can't breathe because they choose not to. I'm sure you mean well, but that type of thinking is dangerous and leads people to suppress their fear rather than face it head on, which makes OCD worse and drives them away from trusting in God.
