  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

It varies for me. The complete draft of my novel is handwritten (NEVER AGAIN, I tell you), so my editing process for the past few months has consisted of me rereading it, then rereading specific sections in order, deciding what to change, and putting the new version in type. I edit those versions for syntax and content as I go (the beauty of the word processor. )

However, as I said, NEVER AGAIN on the handwritten thing. It takes a backpack to transport my first draft as a whole, for crying out loud. So now I work off the computer, and if I'm not feeling inspired to work on a new section, I go back and move sentences around. I also do that as I go, adjusting wording and structure until I like it. Though it does take longer to write this way, I'm too compulsive not to do it.

I always draft short, so most edits end up lengthening my story. I go through the story, rereading it, adding details, rewriting certain parts. I write on the computer, but I must must must must must edit on paper. I'm getting the thing printed out so that I can scribble all over it and make a mess of everything before going back and typing it all up in it's new and improved form.

I tend to edit as I go, a habbit I want to get out of because I never get much finished.

I will also gladly tell you that I usually cut out about 50% of my writing.
Cutting out is good...I've noticed that when I go through a large section and edit for content, my word count drops significantly. Sometimes I can lose as much as a few hundred words! I always feel better about a piece after I go through and cut the unnecessary, excessive phrasing. It simplifies the writing and makes the story easier to follow.

Hm...is that from adding scenes, or reworking things? Reworking lines is usually what leads me to drop a lot of my word count. But sometimes I add new dialogue, description, etc., as part of an edit...and I gain length as a result, naturally.

I do add a lot of scenes, and my setting is almost nonexistent until at least draft two, but even when I'm just reworking lines, it ends up longer.
