Andy Taylor to Arnold's father:

"If we don't teach children to live in society today, what's going to happen to them tomorrow?"

"If you're not going to take responsibility, maybe I should lock
you up."

Wise words from that man!

I love this episode of the Andy Griffith Show. Has anyone seen it before? I like Andy's method of handling Opie's tantrum.

That was great! I used to watch Andy Griffith when I was younger but haven't seen it in forever.

You don't see much parenting like that nowadays. I wonder whatever happened to it?

From what I've seen parents are afraid of their kids, they don't have the energy or desire to deal with them, and they don't really want to be parents--they want kids w/o the responsibility. Too many parents don't care about raising responsible law-abiding, God-fearing citizens. They have kids when they're not ready and don't take the job of parenting serously. They blame others for there kids bad behavior and there are no consequences for bad behavior. Kids don't have to earn anything and are given things despite inappropriate actions. It's sad and depressing how so many parents have become and it's our society that's suffering. If you're not going to commit 110% to raising children don't have them!

Ah, ah, ah...no...GTA IV is responsible for bad behavior! See article
I have GTA Liberty City for my PSP and so far in real life...I've yet to steal a car, kill anybody, or try the sausages at Cassa's!

Here's to the children of the damned, because we're not responsible for our own behavior. Looks like it's nurture not natue.

That's a great episode, and I don't remember seeing before either!

My 7yo never throws fits anymore . . . she's learned it doesn't work. She does try moping, but we either tell her to stop it or miss out on the fun things we've got planned.

My 5yo still gets overtired and throws fits, but usually runs to his room to do it We're teaching them no one wants to be around a fit.

Sometimes our kids will tell us something that changes our minds, but generally we stick to whatever our original decision was.

The video cut out a part where Opie starts crying, Andy asks him what he's doing, and he stops and says "I'm crying and I can't stop". Andy replies, barely looking up from his work, "That's a shame." Lol! I love it!

It's a far cry from some of the parents I see who step down to the child's level and plead or bargain with the child. All I can figure is maybe they think they aren't good parents unless they can keep the child happy.

I think we've commercialized and idealized parenting so much we've made it difficult for people to evaluate what a good/bad parent is and as a result they don't know which direction to go in...all they know is that they have to have kids cus...that's what you do. Either that or because if you have kids and buy X, Y, Z, you will live in a utopia fantasy just like the smiling family on the billboard.
