One of the Big file types that can infect your system, is *.SCR (Screen Savers) I'm surprised that it's not mentioned.

And the Use Macs, are not a solution, unless you're going to pay for the Hardware & Software replacements.

Use linux (which only costs downloads or postage) with a firewall (such as firestarter, again costs $0) and if you get paranoid install an antivirus (such as AVG, which again is free).

Also in prevention that document did not mention firewalls, or residual memory (virus) scanners. If you happen to use firefox, then use an extention called NoScript it can be used to prevent scripts from running on webpages without your permission.

Or use Opera, it's built into the program by design... not as an afterthought/extension. Accessed by > Tools menu > Quick preferences > Enable/Disable Javascript. Or, just click F-12.

Disabling javascript is built into Netscape, Firefox (edit->prefs->content) and any half decent browser out there. Thearetically there are a lot more ways to place a bot on someone's computer then using javascript, NoScript allows site by site permissions as well as blocking more then just javascript.

Well I didn't open any attachments and both of my computers went down yesterday. They both had the same symptoms. One is a Mac and the other is a Windows with XP. It seems most of that info is incorrect up there. Both computers were behind an external firewall with internal firewall software, anti-virus, didn't have any attachments to open, and only surfed to Web sites I knew. Well the Mac is fixed (easy to do) and the XP I'm not sure what to do to fix it. I'll think it about it for a while before I do.

TwistTim's patten pending advice for how to avoid a Computer Virus:

1) Never ever ever get a computer, these things are prone to viruii
2)Never ever ever go online, there are viruii out there, waiting to get on your Computer
3)Since you are reading this, you have already not listened to 1 & 2 so....get anti-virus software like Avast, or something similar
4)Use Common Sense when opening things, if you don't know the sender, don't open the attachment, if your not expecting an attachment, don't open it until you confirm with the sender he meant to send you that....
5)Don't install programs that say will sit on your computer and track your website....think about it...how is sitting on a computer gonna keep track of something on another machine? There are counters out there that get embedded in webpages, and they can tell you where the unique visits came from
6)A free program might just come at a high price, only download from a trusted second party site(Majorgeeks.com or download.com) or from the program originaters website(only if you have been recommended the software, or only if it looks like a real program, and passes critira you have previously decided)
7)use a secure web-browser and keep it up to date
8)make sure you patch your computer, and keep it patched up, just don't install the Windows Genuine Advantage if your worried you might have one of the billions of "pirate" copies(I don't and because my key was stolen, it says I do), that will just lock you out of the computer, till you pay M$ more money...
9) Take everything with a grain of salt. Don't believe every story about a viruii is true.... or that every email story is true.... a good place to start checking is.... http://www.truthorfiction.com/ for email stories.... or http://www.snopes.com/ for urban tales

and that's a start.... one day I'll write a full guide....today is not that day.

At the present time, there are no viruses in the wild that can infect Macs running OS X.

There were two attempts last year, one was a proof of concept that stopped working on February 24, 2006, that did nothing.

The other was called Leap.A but required someone to manually send it to you, you had to unzip it, ignore the warning that this was a program (not a picture as it said it was), enter your Admin username and password to verify that you were ok with this being a program (not a picture) then you had to activate it, at which point it did nothing.

At the present time, neither of the above are in the wild.

Despite years of bragging by Apple fans and a couple of offers to pay cash for creating the first OS X virus, there are still none.

If you want a virus free computing experience, buy a Mac.

One other thing you can do if You got XP or Vista (And some decent Hardware / Mem )

Run A Virtual machine
You can install XP with no protection what so ever, and surf to you're hearts content, infect the mess out of it, and your main system will be safe, let the Virtual PC get infected to high watter, and just restore the HD from a copy (tried it, works great ! )

All you really need is good antispyware/antivirus and firewall software. Then you'll be set.

now you have and if you don't think this worm has teeth, think what would happen if it was left untreated, say it adds an extra 20kb to every file on a computer system and say you have over 2000 files (which I may add is not hard considering the amount of OS files on a system), that's at least 40,000KB, which is approx 39MB, now that may not seem like much but if a drive is nearly full, that 39MB could mean the difference between a safe partition table and corrupt data.

The worm didn't work and is not in the wild today. See my post from March 10 above.

Still nothing in the wild that can affect a Mac today.

I wasn't responding to your post, I was responding to WWC, considering he hadn't heard of any with any "teeth", in spite that it is not an 'active' virus, it still was one that had the potential to cause harm, ie had teeth.

As for in the'wild' or current active, post 10 suggests that there are current mac virsus that exist and still have some payload.

It's also can be fairly pointless to look at any current given IT market because as I'm sure many IT professionals, consumers and end users are aware that technology can change overnight.

That said, the way that mac and linix/unix systems are set up, tends to make it a little bit harder for viruses to tamper with OS files, etc.
