  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

With three kids ranging from 3 to 14 we've found that even going out and doing necessary things like grocery shopping, without the kids at least partially fills the need to be alone together. It's amazing how just being able to talk and finish a thought without being interuppted can help build a feeling of closeness. Of course that's not to say that those other things aren't needed/desirable too, but it does help to see even the more mundane things as a chance to connect.

Whenever we have the money To be honest, we're homebodies, we like TV and video games. We'd rather stay in than go out most of the time.

This has varied over the years. For example...

When we were first married, we were living in a apartment and both working full-time and commuting together. (We had 1 car) We'd stop and do errands on the way home, and had to stop at the laundromat. We had vacation time from our jobs and would usually go away for a week.

When we had our son, (and we had 2 cars) I was pretty much doing all the errand type of things most of the time...and we'd go away about once a year for about a week. We had more vacation time that we'd add to Christmas or other holidays to make it longer and, since our family is local, would stay home, and didn't have to use time to travel to get together with them. We'd go on local outings as a family on a regular basis too.

Now, our son is in college and we have one car again. We might go away for a couple of days a couple times a year. Instead of going away, we've been finding things we can do more locally, such as day trips, to save money. We got a state park pass, ( a bargain at $35 a year) and go there by the water many times...we try for at least once a week, since it's near where we live. And of course it also allows us into other state parks if we are visiting elsewhere in the state.

We try to make down-time to get out in nature and go for walks in beautiful places. We like museums (art, history, science) book stores, plays, concerts, things like that. Our library has museum passes that we can check out that will get us greatly reduced admission or even free admission to many places. AAA also has discounts like that for their members.

Now and then we go to the movies, but tend to watch them at home. For example we went to see Avatar, since we wanted to see it on the wide-screen and will go and see Alice in Wonderland too. Most time we'd prefer to wait for DVD.

Do you get out of the house together?

It depends on the season. Could be less then once a week...could be a few times a week.

-Go on weekend trips together?

Not very often. We do go on work trips but that doesn't count.

-Go on vacations?

We have only been married 3.5 years so that isn't much time. So far we've taken two vacations together since we've been married and we took one before we were married. We've been to Utah, Miami and Virginia Beach. We have done a few weekends away too. We were thinking about going to California this year but I'm not sure we can really afford to spend the money on a trip right now. We could but there are several things we need so..maybe not. We also discussed Chicago which is more reasonable for now.

-What kind of things do you do and where do you go in these outings?

We go to the movies, out to dinner, to local parks, we go to the walkway by the river, theater, shopping, geocashing, geocaching social events, museums, aquariums, the zoo, his sisters game night, picnics, parties with my friends, family events, etc.

Yeah, movies are so expensive now it just isn't worth the money most of the time, IMO. My parents rented Star Trek last night and that was one movie I thought was worth seeing in the theater because of the effects (I saw it in the theater with my fiance).

Oh, I forgot. From time to time, we'd hang out with friends...our place or theirs. Sometimes we'd have dinner together. We'd just hang out and talk and laugh. We sometimes play games, such as dictionary/Balderdash, Apples to Apples ...things along those lines, which are good games with a several people. We also like to play games with our own family of 3. I just bought a deck of "invisible" cards.

Life is full of so many responsibilities and stress...we try to add in fun and laughter and joy where we can.

-Do you get out of the house together?

We try to have at least one outting a weekend. Family-based when the mancubs are with us. Couple/date stuff when they are at their dad's.

Go on weekend trips together?

We have only been on one so far. Since J injured his back in November, he hasn't been up for traveling anywhere for a weekend, plus with only one paycheck money is tight.

Go on vacations?

Our first vacation together was Thanksgiving weekend to Atlanta. Not sure when the next one will be, but I want to try and plan at least one short vacation each year.

What kind of things do you do and where do you go in these outings?

We've gone to listen to a friend's band. We've gone to visit his family on the West coast of FL. We've had typical dinner/movie dates. We've window-shopped in the mall. We've gone to visit friends. We went to Daytona to hang out with his younger sister who was in town on vacation once. We've gone for walks on the beach. We were actually going to the beach every weekend until he hurt his back - we both LOVE the beach. We hang out with my family that lives in town. We've gone out to dinner with friends.

We try to mix it up and do a variety of things. Once his back is better, we will attend some cultural arts events, too. Right now, we can't do much of anything b/c he can't tolerate walking or sitting for extended periods of time.

-Do you get out of the house together?

Yes we do. We go to town, we go for dinner, we go for a drive. We visit friends, we go for a walk or get the groceries done together.

-Go on weekend trips together?

Yes, we book into a spa together every now and then for some real relaxation together. Because both our families live abroad we go visit them both twice a year which makes for a lovely trip out. We also like doing Europan city trips.

-Go on vacations?

We won't be going for a little while because we are soon buying our first home. But I am glad we have done when we could. Our last big one was our honeymoon last year and we went to Malaysia and Indonesia, 3 weeks. Being European this was a great trip. We have also booked last minute trips to Prague and the Canary Islands for example. We got engaged in France where we were for three weeks, staying in a lovely picturesque village with beautiful surroundings, lakes, wildwatersport, and the beach nearby.

-What kind of things do you do and where do you go in these outings?

For warm sunny destinations: Sunbathing, swimming, romantic dinners, snorkling, sightseeing, touring, kayaking.
For citybreaks: sightseeing, opera, romantic dinners, looking for souveniers . Love bringing something home we can use and that'll leave a memory.

We don't go out all that much on our own. If we don't have our eldest child at home in the morning we tend to stay in bed and enjoy the quiet.
We also tend to go out more in the summer months. Usually out for walks nearby

we don't go away for weekends without the children but we try to go away maybe once or twice a year - usually camping

we are averaging one vacation a year I think - vacations are something I find very important. I like to get away from the home so that dh and I can relax (as much as you can with two children).
Most of the vacations have been somewhere in Europe but we have also been to canada, new Zealand and Australia.

-Do you get out of the house together?
Not too often, unless you count going to church together, and sometimes I have to work on Sunday. And of course our youngest child is with us for that. We very rarely get out alone.

-Go on weekend trips together?
In nearly 15 years of marriage we have never done this.

-Go on vacations?
About once a year and that is always to visit his family. I'm considering staying at home this year in order to get things done here I haven't had the time to do.

-What kind of things do you do and where do you go in these outings?
We have been out alone together in hubby's canoe, we walk on the beach, and take walks int he neighborhood.
