  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

My church doesn't have regular choir, but I have been in choirs for special occasions. Last year was my church's 50th anniversary, and we put together a choir for that which I was in. Often we have choirs for Christmas and Easter as well, and I have been involved in some of those (although not recently since I am away at school, but go home for holidays. Makes it rather difficult, since I have not yet mastered being in two places at once!)

I used to sing in the choir but I had a job that kept me from going to Wednesday night choir practice. But I didn't mind not singing in it. The choir director was kind of a silly fuddy duddy. He would swing his hips while directing the Youth Choir. I guess he was trying to relate. But it was a real turn off.

I used to be in choir. I loved it. But then I wasn't allowed to be on the choir anymore. I had self taught myself to play the drums, and since our drummer left, that was my new job. I missed singing. Now, the preacher is leaving (he doesn't know where he's going and he's not giving a reason to leaving) and he's giving the church to his In-Laws. It's a very messy situation. I left, there's no more God in that church. The preacher betrayed him. I really wish I could find a wonderful church around here, but it's hard.

what an interesting name.am i to guess from this that you are an ''african american'', or is it just a name.also do you mean the regular kind of singing, or the very lively kind of black singing(which i actually like listening to. where i used to play ccg's on a sunday, it was over a room rented out to the 'fire mountain' religious group. colourful people to say the least..very expressive.loud too!)
i had to do choir in first year, and hated it. but in the junior school (5-12 yr olds) every weekday morning for six years we'd sing a hymn in the morning collect to a piano accompniment. one of my favourites was morning has broken. its a lovely song, but since then, all of 7 years ago now, i haven't sung like that.only sung for my own amusement, but now i'm my band's new singer, so i guess that this is my chance to start singing meaningful things again.

a thought just occurred to me. those of you whose church doesn't have a choir, why not just start a choir? all ye have to do is sing in harmony..you wouldn't have to be the best singers in the wrld. How hard can it possibly bee. Get the minister/priests backing, and put a message on the church's notice board, then hold auditions. You'll have your choir, and it'll really bring your church's members closer together.

Raises his hand......

I am in our churches choir. God has truly blessed us in the 3 years that I have been a member. We went from having only 25 on the roster and maybe 15 show up for practice and on Sunday. To having 45-50 show up for practice and on sunday mornings, and the roster has grown to 60+.

I am also in a men's quartet were we focus on that good ole close harmony an sing alot of Gaither songs. Also I am in a Tenor/Bass ensomble, a Trio, and sing solo's.

God has been keeping me busy with the gift that He has blessed me with.

Peace and Joy in the Lord always.

I've been in Church Choirs for over 45 years. Some of my happiest memories are of singing and chanting.

My husband was our Parish's choir director until his heart and back problems became too bad for him to continue. I recently injured my vocal cords and can no longer sing - and I'm just devastated about that!

Our Church Services are all chanted and sung. The music is very ancient but there are new pieces which are based closely on the ancient chants composed by people like Tchiakovsky, Rachmaninoff, Ledkovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Glazunov, and Bortnyansky.

I'm not allowed to post links, but if you search Google on Russian Orthodox MP3 you will find many wonderful websites with MP3 and WAV files of some of our beautiful chants.

Blessings

I am in my church's choir for special occasions only since there is no regular choir. Unfortunatly my church is a little too smalle to have a regular choir. My ex gf was in a choir at her church but there were a few people that made very bad rumors about her singing behind her back and she ended up getting booted from the choir with no way to defend herself.~Alec
