How do you stop relying on alcohol?

I could not stop without going to rehab and AA. Most alcoholics I know are incapable of stopping without the help of AA and the 12 steps.

I was incapable of helping myself, so I needed outside help. Rehab, in and outpatient, as well as regular attendance at AA meetings and working the 12 steps.

It is not stupid to say. I was challenged with the very same statements when I resisted going to AA, but was a mess due to my drinking. And the "stupid" person asking me the question was my highly intelligent, skilled, psychotherapist with a Ph.D. in Psychology and over 30 years of experience.

What reasons are there that you do not go ahead with attending an AA meeting? I had a whole slew of them 21 years ago. My husband would hate me, my kids would learn I was an alcoholic, I could get sober by just being a better Christian, AA meetings were inconvenient, AA was a cult, I was not like THOSE people, on and on. After a two year relapse, I ended up swallowing pain pills, legitemitely prescribed for me for real pain, and washing them down with a huge bottle of white zinfandel. From that, I spent six days in a psych ward of a hospital, followed by 12 days in an inpatient rehab. This was after over a year of outpatient rehab treatment.

Alcoholism is a progressive, deadly disease. If you do not get to AA, or a rehab, you could die, or kill someone while drunk. Most alcoholics end up in one of three places, if they continue drinking: Jails, Institutions, or DEAD.

I know plenty of people who came into AA via the courts. The judge orders them to attend meetings. I also know of alcoholics who end up in prison. I used to take AA meetings to the prisoners on a monthly basis./

Denial will not get you sober.

Cain addiction is in the subconscious part of the brain, the part of the brain that we can not control.
We can control the conscious part so in order to battle the desire we have to feed the conscious with as many tools and understanding of what we call recovery.

With the abuse of alcohol/ drugs our bodies now feel normal when a drink is in it. When we take away the drug/alcohol or any addiction our body is going to be screaming for it. So for many finding support is so very important.

Yes there are some who have been able to just stop and walk away from their addiction. But from my experience I have not seen many make it without support from others who can call us on the crap our addicted brains are telling us. For me I learned that I really needed to rely on God 100% and have an open mind to what others are telling me.

The CAGE can identify alcohol problems over the lifetime. Two positive responses are considered a positive test and indicate further assessment is warranted.

The T-ACE, which is based on the CAGE, is valuable for identifying a range of use, including lifetime use and prenatal use, based on the DSMIIIR criteria. A score of 2 or more is considered positive. Affirmative answers to questions A, C, or E = 1 point each. Reporting tolerance to more than two drinks (the T question) = 2 points.

Addiction counselors use this test as well as others to determine where the person is in their addiction.

The CAGE questionnaire, among other methods, has been extensively validated for use in identifying alcoholism

There are a few more on the wiki to self test. Sometimes we need to see it in black and white to see past the denial. Or google in addiction self tests, addiction forums and read others stories. Do that and let me know your thoughts

I've got 3 + years sobriety doing it this way.
