I would like to suggest a reading of these two articles to help better undersatnd the beginnings of the pentecostal and charismatic movement.

In short, my undersatnding of the whole event goes like this:

Blessed Elena Guerra was receiving promting from God in the late 1800's to ask the church for a renewal in teh Holy Spirit.

Pope Leo XIII, at her request began the work of beginning a time of focus on the Spirit, althought hte church itself was very slow to comprehend this.

Then after a proayer of invoking the Holy Spirit over the entire church on Dec 31st, 1900 (the eve before the new millenium), a woman named Agnes Oznam in Topeka Kansas was the first christian to pray in tongues (of course not including the apostles and the saints throughout the ages). This began was is known as the pentecostal movement.

Later, Catholics also began to receive this gift in 1967 when some catholics visited a pentecostal church.

Isn't it funny how the prayer invoked over the whole church by the Holy Pontiff preceeding this gift? I think that the church is more united than many realize.

Please enjoy these articles. And share your thoughts please!

Thanks Catholic Flame. This is a very good topic.

I recommend the book AS BY A NEW PENTECOST: The Dramatic Beginnings of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal by Patti Gallagher Mansfield

This is written by one of the college students at Dusqusne University who was on retreat at the very first Catholic Charismatic Prayer meeting.

When Pope John XXIII was elected after the death of Pope Pius XXII, the Holy Spirit urged him to open a new Councel, a great Ecumenical Councel. He obeyed and opened Vatican II, called it the Great Ecumenical Councel and invited the leaders of all of the World Christian Churches. A great many accepted the invitation and was there at the opening. In union with the leadership in the Catholic Church and leaders of the non-Roman Catholic Christian Community, Pope John XXIII's prayer included this fervant request, "O Holy Spirit… pour forth the fullness of your gifts… Renew your wonders in this day as by a new Pentecost".. Imagine the Christian Church praying in unity and see how God answered this prayer. Patti Gallagher Mansfield was a participant in the February 1967 "Duquesne Weekend" which marked the beginning of the Charismatic Renewal in the Catholic Church. The flames of this outpouring of the Holy Spirit spread like a wild fire across the country and landed on the west coast in Southern California very quickly. I believe It was 1968 when the Prayer Group I was in began in Riverside County. It was the most amazing thing I could imagine. It grew and grew at an amazing speed and we saw so many miracles.

I am sure there are others here that go back to these very early days that could share with us some of their experiences.
Please join in.

I am wondering what differences, if any, there are within the Catholic and Protestant Charismatic movements, either throughout history or today. Is there anything specific that separates them both in regard to the movement of the Spirit, the vessels whom the Lord uses, the use of tongues, and all that?

I am greatly blessed by the music of J.M. Talbot. He does seem to have an exceptional anointing on his work.

I dated a Catholic girl for several years, and we attended her church regularly, but I never witnessed any Charismatic leanings while we were in attendance.

How widespread is the Charismatic experience within the Catholic Church? Do healing services take place? And how is the use of the gifts taught? In training sessions? Is prophecy spoken within any of the meetings?

Just curious....
I am a companion of all those who love the Lord.

Well, first of all we are Catholic and conform to all of the doctrines of the Catholic Church. I am pretty sure you are familiar with many of them.

That being said, we experience the manifestations of all of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, incuding the ones you mentioned above.
Our Prayer Group has Healing Mass every First Friday of the Month and then every Friday we have Prayer Group and pray and lay hands on folks individually at the conclusion of the meeting.

Welcome to the Catholic Charismatic Renewal Dave.

You are in for a treat if you look through this forum. Most people are shocked to know that catholics, of all people, are praying in tongues, discerning the Spirits, and speaking a word for the Lord.

Be blessed here!

Wow... that is soooo amazing and speaks volumes to me....

It is soooo amazing that after the (Catholic) Pope invoked an outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the whole Church (the whole Body of Christ everywhere) that on the same day, across the world, in the U.S., an outpouring of the Holy Spirit did indeed fall on Protestant Biblical college students.

(Were Catholics not ready to receive such an outpouring? Maybe...)

This confirms to me what the Lord has been speaking to me about today and many months (going to a few years, even) before. I will not talk about this right now though.

I find this really interesting also...!! It also confirms some things for me too that I've been wondering.. Now we can see that the Holy Spirit is beginning to act this way in the Catholic church as well, in the Renewal... I sometimes wonder why the Orthodox church does not have the 'charismatic gifts'...I've talked to other Orthodox people about this, and they seem rather critical of the idea.

Yeah, this really is awesome.

I really do agree that God's intention to guide the pope for that prayer was meant to start in the protestant churches to help bring about the full union of the church.

We are beginning to see it little by little, and of course, it is the holy Spirit that leads people to the full unity of the sacraments.

I do believe that the catholic church wasn't completely ready for the gifts of the Holy Spirit at that point. But God did use it to create the pentecostal church.

All part of His step by step design to bring everyone into the fullness of truth.

From darkness to light, with some grey areas in between, on the journey.

I'm not sure who gave that incorrect information out, but by 1891, Maria Woodsworth-Etter had already traveled across America several times holding tent meetings where the power of GOD was manifested for remarkable healings and miracles. The gifts of The Spirit were always in full operation during all of her services. Whole towns came under conviction, people would suddenly go into trances that would last hours even days.

I know that some folks really want their denomination to somehow lay claim to the so-called pentecostal movement here in America, but it was all GOD. He made it happen, and moved through this woman in a strength that completely rivals anyone after her, even today. Benny Hinn wouldn't even be in the same room with her.

I dunno Arbiter, I know that what happened is true, but I guess you are saying that others before her were operating in the gifts of the Spirit.

I do agree that they were operating in healing and the like, but tongues? I dunno about that.

Do a search on Agnes Oznam and see what people say about her.

Here is a reference for that person,..

http://www.biblestudying.net/charismatic17.html

She was not the first person to speak in tongues for any pentecostal movement, just the first of that guys students.

Here's a reference for Maria,..

BTW, tongues are only one of the gifts. There are greater ones that we are to seek from GOD also, such as the power gifts, like working of miracles and gifts of healing. They are the hardest to receive and maintain. Tongues is but a stepping stone for a born-again Christian.
