I found something interesting about the life of Hezekiah. After God saved Jerusalem by slaying Sennacherib’s Assyrian army, Hezekiah fell ill and asked for more time so he could have a son to inherit the throne of David. Hold that thought.
Go back to Genesis where God told Abraham to sacrifice Isaac the promised son. Abraham obeyed, considering that God would raise Isaac up from the dead because He knew God would keep His promises. Now also hold that thought.
When the Israelites asked for a king, God picked a candidate of their choosing. They did not choose God to be their king. But God selected David while Saul was still king.
If Hezekiah had trusted God to raise him back from the dead and not ask for more time to have a son, God Himself would have picked the next king. And it would have been God. But Hezekiah wanted more time and his heir was one of the wickedest rulers to ever take the throne in Jerusalem. After God gave Hezekiah more time, Hezekiah showed all of his kingdom to Babylon and God sent Isaiah to tell him that his kingdom would be given over to the Babylonians after his death.
Why is all this relevant to eschatology? It shows us when the elect will be sealed and thus when Israel receives their Messiah. The Islamic jihadists are the antitype of the Assyrians who arrogantly boast that they will conquer the world. The elect of the nation of Israel are the antitype of Hezekiah trusting in God’s deliverance. The Babylonians are the Gentile alliance made with Jerusalem and they will one day take Jerusalem by force.
