I'm really struggling right now with what to do with the next year or so of my life. I am graduating in May with a degree and finance, trying to find a job for post graduation, getting married in August, and trying to figure out where i am going to live after graduation. But the most important thing on my mind has been how and when should I go to seminary and a missions ministry that I feel as though the Lord is leading me to. My options are:
  • Full time Seminary starting in August then missions when I'm done
  • Part time seminary in august then leave around a year later for full time missions, and come back a year or so later to finish out the degree
  • Not worry about seminary until after I get back from the mission field.
ANy advice would be greatly appreciated. Or maybe providing me with something to think about or another option that I might have overlooked would be amazing also! Thank You!

It is difficult to make these decisions of what to do. Since you're getting married in August, I would guess this is a decision the two of you need to make.

Depending upon what type of mission you'd like to go on, a couple thoughts come to mind. Taking a little bit between your bachelors and masters (assuming that's where you're at), practical experience in the field can definitely benefit your educational experience as you have something to base your studies on - not just conceptualizing based on a textbook.

On the other hand, if you need a greater level of degree to do the mission you wish to go on, then that can help decide that education may be better first.

The next thought I'd suggest consideration of is will you follow through with your mission goals when you are faced with how much time you've already spent in school, and the expenses of doing so.

Most missionaries I've met spent a good amount of time raising money and getting their affairs in order to go where they were called to go. They also spent some time being immersed in cultural and language training to help them before they shipped off. Depending upon your situation and the agency that you go on the mission with, there may be a lot of prep work, so I'd suggest talking with those you are planning to go with or are considering going with.

I attended a college where a one year mission trip was able to be integrated into the program, and studies were done abroad while on the mission field. I didn't do that program, but many did. I'm not sure if a seminary would have that, as this was an undergrad program.

Definitely prayer, not just yours, but those you are accountable to.

I wish you well in your search for a decision. What an awesome calling.

Thank you so very much for your input!

The Lord has really laid on my heart that through dwelling in His will I will have all that I need for an effective ministry, and that I shouldn't worry about seminary until the Lord has said that I need more head knowledge to better do His will. He has reminded me of Moses and how he doubted His ability's to be an effective leader to the Hebrew people and His ability to speak. God used Him anyways in great fashion!

The Lord also spoke through a friend of mine and said "Ministers should spend less time seeking book knowledge about God and more time on their knees in prayer." That really Hit me and made me realize that the relationship I have will the Lord will far surpass the knowledge of Him that I would better be able to communicate through seminary.

Anyway, thanks again guys I truly appreciate your takes on the issue!
