Hello, I am a Lutheran conducting an "online religion" project for my religion class at my local university.

The only way I am able to complete this project is if I have responses from people on online forums like yourselves. I also hope to get some personal answers through my research

If you would like to help me, please respond the questions I have created below. It would be phenomenal if you could answer all five of the questions, but even answering one of the questions would greatly help my research.

Thank you very much

1. How, if at all, has participating in this forum changed the way you go about asking religious questions, having religious conversations, or interacting “religiously” with others in general while you are offline?

2. Do you feel a need to approach religious topics in real life

conversations because you have this forum where you can instantly get responses from countless people?

3. This might be a difficult question to answer truthfully. Please PM me if you feel uncomfortable answering it in an open forum; your results will be kept confidential
: Do you feel that you act or present yourself in a different way in this online community compared to when you interact with people when you are offline?

4. How has your offline life changed the way you act or present yourself on this website?

5. Does this website contribute to the “compartmentalization” of religion for you? (the separation of various aspects of your life). In other words, does being a part of this website serve as your only religious outlet, or does it further facilitate the integration of religion in your day-to-day life?

It hasn't.

No

The biggest problem with online discussions is that other forms of communication (i.e. visual) are not observed, so it can be difficult for others to understand they way you 'say' things. Body language and facial expressions are not taken into consideration. I would say that one must present themselves differently online than they would personally for that reason.

1. How, if at all, has participating in this forum changed the way you go about asking religious questions, having religious conversations, or interacting “religiously” with others in general while you are offline?

Not really. However, I live in a very remote area and this was for a while my only way to talk to people for a while. It was a considerable help with the isolation.

2. Do you feel a need to approach religious topics in real life conversations because you have this forum where you can instantly get responses from countless people?

I'm not quite sure what your question is here. If you are asking if participating in this forum encourages me to discuss religious topics more, then no. However if you are asking if the forum has prepared me better for such conversations then my answer would be yes. Many of the people on this forum have taught me quite a bit.

Also, this is not a 'Chat Room' type environment. It's more of a Bulletin Board or Notice Board. Thus, the answers are almost never 'instantanious.'

I have a tendency of being a bit more forthright here than off-line. However, even in person, I can be quite confrontational when doctrine and theology are being warped or twisted into what I perceve to be intentional error. The same with Church History.

4. How has your offline life changed the way you act or present yourself on this website?

Yes, for instance; I recently changed my Avitar.

My faith has always been an intregal part of my life. It's expressed in just about all the things I do. Like any other son of Adam however, the areas where it doesn't are where the Lord and I are currently working it out.

Now, if you were looking for a somewhat more cryptic set of answers:

 1. No
 2. No
 3. Yes
 4. Yes
 5. Not really... no.

No

Sometimes ... and I would believe most do. On-line doesn't replace the personal contact and overtones and voice fluctuations that make up one's personality that is part of the communication process.

It has made me more diligent in God's Word

#1. Really this does not affect how I talk to people offline.

#2. No I do not feel the need that much in real life because usually everybody is busy in person and its easier on here to ask or state what i want to and then folks reply as they get time.

#3. I do feel I can be more bold online simply because I have more time to think about what I want to say. In person lots of times you have to make a quick decision and sometimes that is not always the best decision or response to make.

#4. Not much at all.

#5. It is not my only outlet as I am involved with my local church. One thing I did today was to clean at the church. Can't do that online. Working and being apart of the local church gives one a good feeling inside.

I hope this helps you. Where do you go to college???
