The most common idea is that Paul wrote it. However, the author never identifies himself, and apparently there are enough stylistic differences from Paul's other letters that many scholars don't think he did. (Even conservative, evangelical scholors.)

I've heard Apollos suggested, although I'm at a loss for the evidence for his authorship. I think I've even heard Barnabas suggested. But on what grounds would that be?

I think the most honest answer is...we don't know.

Who is the author of this book? It's so profound, right up there with Romans
in explaining the new covenant.

There has been some speculation that Apollos was the author, but in truth its authorship has been a mystery ever since the second century.

I've always been curious about the reasons people would suspect Apollos wrote Hebrews.
