  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hebrews 4:16
"Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need."

Can we discuss this verse because I'm really lost on what this verse really means.

Hi Tannic, does your name have to do with wines?

Here is that verse in context and in a couple of different translations for you:

Amplified:

14Inasmuch then as we have a great High Priest Who has [already] ascended and passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession [of faith in Him].
15For we do not have a High Priest Who is unable to understand and sympathize and have a shared feeling with our weaknesses and infirmities and liability to the assaults of temptation, but One Who has been tempted in every respect as we are, yet without sinning. 16Let us then fearlessly and confidently and boldly draw near to the throne of grace (the throne of God's unmerited favor to us sinners), that we may receive mercy [for our failures] and find grace to help in good time for every need [appropriate help and well-timed help, coming just when we need it].

NLT:
Christ Is Our High Priest
14 So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. 15 This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. 16 So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

Or did you wonder how we could come to His throne?

Not sure what you are having the problem with.
Hope this helped somewhat.

I like your explanation of that verse and I would like to know a way to come to the throne of grace.

ps my name has nothing to do with wines.

We come before the throne of grace in worship and prayer. Jesus is our high priest and continually pleading the atonement made for us by His blood. He knows our weaknesses and infirmities.

Enter His gates with thanksgiving...
(I just begin thanking Him for everything that comes to my mind)
And enter His courts with Praise...

In His presence is fullness of joy!

Tannic.

4:16 Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

The throne is an image of social and political justice. A "throne of grace" signifies a ruler who is predisposed toward you. The reason for this partiality is found in 4:14. The reason for the fear-and-trepidation of the one before the throne is a combination of 4:11 (the risk of disobedience) and 4:12 (the moral judgment inherent in the Word of God).

I would like to know a way to come to the throne of grace.

There are various religious practices that involve confession to God and petitions for forgiveness. However, 4:16 says that the goal of the approach to the throne is also "to find grace to help in time of need." Clearly the writer is concerned here with that famous theme of the entire letter, namely, "falling from a state of grace." He believes that followers of the Way may simply ask God for grace, namely, spiritual assistance and ability to overcome the temptation toward disobedience and apostasy.

I suspect that individual and corporate prayer is the answer you are looking for. Petitionary prayer was big in the first century, and it still is today.

I hope this helps. Any further questions or comments are welcome.
