Was Moses correcting himself? And the word (in Exodus 20:8) should have been "keep" rather than "remember"? I think you are mistaken on this point Crib.
There are apparent 'differences' in the Gospel accounts of certain events, but this does not mean that one is correct and the other is an error, does it? Aren't both versions correct? (I am sorry if I have misunderstood your reasoning, but it appears that you are saying the Deuteronomy 5 version is more correct than the Exodus 20 one.)
The word translated "keep" in the Deut 5:12 verse, is translated "take heed" in Deut 19:12; and "observe" in 5:32 etc. But the main sense of the Hebrew appears to be "keep diligently, guard, protect" (See Gesenius and also Wilson's).
It seems reasonable then, to paraphrase the Deut 5:12 verse:
"Take heed to the Sabbath day, and be careful to sanctify it, as the Lord your God has formerly commanded you."
And however the last segment of Deut 5:12 is translated, is not Moses pointing the people back to the original command (i.e. to Exodus 20)?
"Keep the Sabbath day to sanctify it, as the Lord thy God commanded thee" at Mount Sinai.
Moses, under inspiration, is pointing the people back to the original. (It is there, I believe, that the reason for the Sabbath command is stated.)
