In its early days, Google relied on a proprietary formula that counted the number of cross-links to a given site to determine its priority in search results. At some point they apparently ditched that though, and instead began directly counting clicks off the search results. Everything you click when on a google site, including links within gmail, first goes to their servers, then you are sent to the site.
Clearly, after the 2016 election Big Tech decided that the future of America was too important to leave in the hands of its people, and that the free flow of ideas was a luxury we couldn't afford rather than a fundamental pillar of the nation, and began censoring conservative speech.
On the positive side, I commend google for dropping the 'don't be evil" motto, since clearly they have given up trying to follow it.
I use searx.me for searches, which I find better than google. And I look forward to Vivaldi's built-in mail client, hopefully coming soon, so google can't follow my clicks.
Monopolies have always been regulated in this nation, from railroads to air traffic, from telegraph to telephone to the airwaves. I think we would do well to de-google ourselves as much as possible on an individual basis, and for the government to step in and ensure that Big Tech behaves itself.
