going away to college...

I'm leaving in a couple weeks for the University of Texas at Austin. It's going to be really cool. I'm studying pharmacy.

going from kansas to bob jones U in south carolina

I'm not going anywhere. The college I will be going to is about a 6 minute drive from my house. Some people do want to go away but I have absolutly no desire to go anywhere. I like where I live, and schooling is cheaper here as well, and my boyfriend is here and we're going to the same college. So are most of my friends...and I get to live at home. So for me, I wouldn't want it any other way.

What school? I go to UW-Whitewater and I live about 45 minutes northeast. That's kinda crazy... Wisconsin usually isn't the place people go... usually we're trying our hardest to get out(but not me... I could never leave this state!).

Anyway, like I said, I go to the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater, mid-sized school of about 10,000. It's gonna be my second year, and I can't wait to get back. I'm involved in Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, and it's gonna be a great time.

I'm going to Lawrence University, its in Appleton, I can't wait to get there! I'm gonna be all alone for like 2 and a half weeks! The last of my friends leaves August 30th and I don't leave till september 16th!!

I don't know exactly where UW-Whitewater is, I don't know Wisconsin that well, all I know are mostly the major cities and some smaller ones around Appleton

Lawrence has roughly 1350 students, it is very small, but I am really looking foward to it

I grew up around Appleton(Neenah, to be specific)

Whitewater's kinda between Madison and Milwaukee, but to the south and a little closer to Madison. Wisconsin is definitely the place to be.

Can I give one piece of advice from a seasoned college veteran? DON'T go home for the first month. Stay at school, in the dorms and GET INVOLVED! All the freshman that you will be living with are facing the same new experience that you are, and trust me, this is when a lot of close friendships are made. When you go home, you miss out on a lot (ouch...lesson learned the hard way!).


Seriously, you probably will get homesick at some point. I didn't think I would either, but it's a weird feeling. You miss your life at home, where your "comfort zone" was, and part of you wants to go back to that...but at the same time, you are so excited about this new adventure and you don't want to leave. And trust me, being away from home for 2-3 weeks really isn't a comparison. With those trips, you know you are going to be home within a matter of days, and while the missions trips are full of work, it isn't quite the same as college and being on your own. Chances are you will probably experience homesickness at some point - especially when you actually GET SICK! You may not...but don't be surprised if you do.

Just remember to stay involved, be active, and ENJOY this time. When you graduate, it's full force into the working world, and trust me, it isn't the same!

My experience - MISERY!

I went 400 miles from home to Medical school when I was 18. I didn't go home until Christmas. I was placed in a University flat with 3 alcoholic vegetarian atheists. I missed my friends, family, athletics and swimming clubs, church, neighbours, school, saturday job etc like crazy.

I didn't eat properly, I didn't study, I didn't exercise, I didn't go to church, I only made a handful of close friends.

I think it's the huge change - not just from dependence to independence, but also geographically. You'll be surprised at how much routine you have at home, and how much you take for granted. I was.

Suffice to say, the past 7 years have been much better! The only advice or suggestion I would give would be routine - try to keep something going that you did at home, even if it's regular CF sessions!
