  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Even In the OT it is God making the call, not some king. But even then the king that God told failed to finish the job and the group would come back to haunt Israel.

Right.

I was just confirming that he no longer commands this. Like you said it was a very limited command for several times in the Old Testament. Fortunately for us he reserves judgment until he comes back

Why did god command killing in the Old Testament?

Does he command it now days?

Have you not heard the term used today to eradicate terrorism?

Here is a link from the Law Essay professionals...

The United Nations Capability To Counter Terrorism International Law Essay | Law Teacher

The question the world is having to grapple with is how do we eradicate terrorism to promote peace?

In the essay above the agreement between world leaders is....

"Certainly terrorism is widely recognized across the world as the worst threat to mankind, which has compelled the nations to spend millions of dollars beefing up their security."

In the Bible terrorism was instituted by certain cultures and tribes who became a threat to mankind, by conscripting and fostering their generations to become natural born killers/assassins.

So what the God of the Holy Bible did is to use the nation of Israel, amongst other nations, as his rod of armour to destroy this threat. Even if it required destroying them from their young to their old, in order to eradicate this threat.

If we look in the Middle East, where generations upon generations of Islamic fundamentalists have been brought up to kill and to do all manner of evil, by tying explosives around themselves and blowing themselves up or beheadings their enemies, then we see that this type of culture amongst these tribes becomes a threat to mankind, in the same way those particular tribes in the Old Testament became a threat, by which rational thinking could not be used to promote peace, unless the threat is eradicated.

The world today has been doing just that, when America went into Afghanistan and eradicated the fundemetalist elements of the Taliban. The Americans wiped them out in the same way the Israelites were commanded to wipe them out.

God uses nations against nations and if you wanted to draw a distinction between events in the Old Testament compared to our day and age in order to find inconsistencies, then you will not find any. In fact what you will find is that the last 100 years have been the bloodiest and the deaths attributed in the last 120 years is more than the battles throughout human history.

So we ought not do selective biased judgement to create a false narrative that somehow the Old Testament wars against terrorism were genocidal. If a person wrongfully claimed that God promoted genocide, this false claim is clearly proven to be contextually unfounded, inconsistent and hypocritically made by the very people who promote peace through the eradication of terrorism, after all look how many countries this war on terrorism has led to, or should I say spread to!

Very true.
Didn't look at it like that.

One thing for sure we know is that god doesn't tell a single person to kill another person. You always hear on the news people claim "god told me" and then they do something that they shouldn't have.

In respect to using nations I agree. Good post. Thank you.

God doesn't need to kill anyone. He can arrange for whatever results he wants without doing so. In the OT, God's commands to kill were the results earned punishment—of people sinning, usually persistently sinning for a long time and propagating their sinful ways to others, as well. It was justice being done that also accomplished other things that were good for people, such as seeing that sinning really had consequences (something that people had trouble believing even after they had seen it happen!). In OT times, one reason God worked through people so that people would respect the people he worked through. He sometimes spoke through that person and the people needed to learn to take him seriously. Hard hearts were so prevalent that God even waited for the Jews he had saved from Egypt to die before moving on with his plan. Then they moved into a region where everyone was even more sinful. It was a world where everyone was earning death. It's the same world today, except now some Christian are obedient and are light for the world. Thank the Lord for his saving intervention!

Why did god command killing in the Old Testament?

I think, if Bible tells, God ordered killing, it also tells the reason. For example in the case of the great flood, the reason was that people were corrupted and evil.

Yahweh saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually… … God saw the earth, and saw that it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth.
Gen. 6:5,12
