Hi,

I am currently involved in a debate with a Christian friend who desires to become obese. He claims, for one, that God is telling him to become obese. Secondly, he says that this is not a sin because gluttony cannot be defined as overeating. He desires to become 300 pounds and he would like a 300 pound or larger wife.

I was just wondering how we can test what we are actually hearing from God? Also, what is gluttony and is it sinful to purposefully try to become obese?

Thanks,

Alice

Hi, Alice.

Gluttony according to Chambers dictionary - given to, consisting in, excessive eating.

Proverbs 23:2
and put a knife to your throat if you are given to gluttony.

This idea goes against Scripture and self-control.
Therefore I think it's safe to say this is your friends idea not God's.
In Christ we're not supposed to worry about food.

Matthew 6:25
[ Do not worry ] ‘Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?

Hope that helps I'd also recommend he look up self control verses in Scripture!
Here are some BibleGateway - : Self control to get started.

God bless you both.

Gluttony is a failure of self control, which the Bible clearly tells us we should have. Self control is one of the fruits of the Spirit and all Christians should manifest it.

The "Seven Deadly Sins" is a classification of vices that have been used since early Christian times
to instruct followers concerning humanity's falling short of the perfect TRI-UNE God.

LIST:

wrath
greed
sloth
pride
lust
envy
gluttony

The Catholic Church divides sin into two categories:
1. venial sins which are relatively minor and can be forgiven with sacraments
2. mortal sins...those which are not forgiven are fatal to eternal life

Theologically a mortal sin is believed to destroy the life of grace within the person
and thus creates the threat of eternal damnation.

B>>>>>
In Proverbs 6 (NASB); King Solomon states to his son:
"...16 There are six things which the LORD hates,
Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him:

....namely the LIST:

Haughty eyes...(A proud look)
a lying tongue,
hands that shed innocent blood,
A heart that devises wicked plans (evil plots)
Feet that run rapidly to evil ( swift to run into mischief )
A false (deceitful) witness who utters lies,
one who spreads strife among brothers. (sows discord among the brethren)

C>>>>>
Galatians 5:19-21 ...Paul's long list:
includes more of the traditional sins...longer list.... "mortal sins" ??

adultery
fornication
uncleanness
lasciviousness
idolatry
sorcery
hatred
variance
emulations
wrath
strife
seditions
heresies
envyings
murders
drunkenness
revellings
"and such like"

Romans 1….
28 And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer,
God gave them over to a depraved mind,
to do those things which are not proper,
29 being filled with all:
(LIST-)
1. unrighteousness
2. wickedness
3. greed
4. evil;
5. full of envy
6. murder strife
7. deceit
8. malice;
9. they are ….>>>gossips
10. slanderers
11. haters of God
12. insolent
13. arrogant
14. boastful
15. inventors of evil
16. disobedient to parents
17. without….>>> understanding
18. untrustworthy
19. unloving
20. unmerciful

and although they know the ordinance of God,
that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same,
but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.

John 3 (NASB) ...Jesus teaches Rabbi Nicodemus
17 For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world,
but that the world might be SAVED THROUGH Him.
18 He who BELIEVES in Him is NOT judged;
he who does not believe has been judged already,
because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Sirach 23:6 (NRSVCE)
Let neither gluttony nor lust overcome me, and do not give me over to shameless passion.

Sirach 37:30
for overeating brings sickness, and gluttony leads to nausea.

Sirach 37:31
Many have died of gluttony, but the one who guards against it prolongs his life.
