I have! They have one near here I've went to maybe twice.

That's cool. I've never been to any. As bad as I am with directions while driving, I don't think I need to visit one. I'd be there til midnight.

Haha i stay near the opening. I don't think I've ever completed one. I think I just kind of roam around and then wander back out.

So it's May and I'm pretty sure it's the perfect time to be planting a few flowers and veggies and fruits... Does anyone have a garden and what are you planting?

I seriously have thought about recreating the dog lot in our backyard into a fenced in garden space. Where I could have a few tables set up, and some garden areas and enough room to actually move around. Where also my dog wouldn't be able to come in and destroy any of my progress. A few ideas I had look like these:
Everything could be around the edges of the lot.

Although I don't have a food garden, I do have azaleas, day lilies, Boston ferns, petunias, rose of Sharon, and various other plants that depend on me for upkeep and protection from deer. Maybe I'll try to grow vegetables next year.

A friend and his wife are building an elevated garden in his backyard. They plan to grow lots of veggies. As they already have chickens and goats, their property is turning into a little farm.

How fun! I don't have a garden yet, I'm still in the planning phase of what I want to do. It would be better if I had more space but I think if I too had a raised garden that would help immensely.

I would love to have some goats I hear you can actually rent them to come and eat your grass, lol.

I've been harvesting a couple things off an on from the backyard garden. There's been a lot of challenges (i.e. bugs , the heat , etc.), but overall it's doing quite well.

Yesterday I decided to roast a few things I harvested. I'm also thinking of making some salsa soon, using small tomatoes (once they fully ripen), chile pequins and a molcajete.

Getting a decent yield lately, which is quite rewarding.

i'm not trying to do much this year. just random chaos in pots that I like to watch grow. I mostly like to plant or let grow things that I can also eat. I put the rest of the moringa tree seeds in random pots, was surprised some came up because they are 3 year old seeds and I heard that they don't tend to last long. their leaves taste good and are very healthy. it's a plant that lots of people from india eat. they are tropical trees but you can still grow them as annuals.

last year I pulled a sucker from the front yard crape myrtle and put it in a pot, it's growing pretty nicely now. beautiful trees. they are everywhere in dallas.

put random pinto beans in pots just to see them grow. had some wild onions growing but ate them recently. the plum tree is probably wishing it was in the ground by now, wish I could give it away.

I have a few different oaks growing in pots . a few wild sunflowers came up again this year but they do terrible in pots. one came out of the ground. I hope he gets as big as the ones in the area I found the seeds at.

I don’t have a garden but I’ve done it in the past. I like the idea of growing food but the reality is demanding. The raised beds look nice. Elevated beds are ideal for longevity and less taxing on the back. They can be built inexpensively by someone handy.

Completely agree, and I use a wheelchair so it would be easy for me to lean and plant at my level. I don't really have a lot of room to have a garden where I'm at right now but hopefully in the future I will.

I think its a wise investment. Most don’t consider later years and I read a piece by someone addressing this. The bending takes a toll over time. I know that from firsthand experience.

You can have a pretty space with colorful stakes and all the things you wish to grow. I wanted to homestead (luckily the Lord stepped in). I found a year long program that covered farming, animal husbandry. forestry, and running a business.

This is what happens from watching too much PBS. P. Allen Smith had me craving livestock.

Melissa Norris and Eliot Coleman are great resources for getting started. But for entertainment’s sake I recommend Jenna Woginrich‘s books. Her exploits are hilarious. Ditto for The Quarter Acre Farm and Farm City.

The personal stories from people who walked away from different lifestyles are usually good. You encounter the growing pains and challenges a novice would experience.
