So, I went home for Thanksgiving, and my mom and I were talking. I'd mentioned to her before that I was on a boxed wine drinking kick (normally I'm a cheap beer kind of girl). She was telling me how now she was checking out some wines, and she had a box in the closet, and then she pulled out a bottle of Mogen David. I managed to not snicker while I thought about this thread!

Does this mean the Verba no longer needs to be spoken (since they are all previously consecrated) and that Jesus blood is always present in the bottles till used?

I believe that it would be "dedicated to the service of the Church" in much the same way candles new Hymnals, Sacred Vessels, Paraments Etc. are. Not Consecrated with the Verba.

Well it could have been worse, she could have pulled out a bottle of Mad Dog 20/20 or Thunderbird. If you aren't familiar, the Mad Dog or MD is actually Mogen David. And here's some real trivia for you, Mogen David is named after the Star of David, Magen David in Hebrew.

Other classics from the same category are Ripple which is no longer available, at least until someone buys up the name. As well as Cisco and Night Train Express which I haven't had the pleasure of sampling, we just don't have enough homeless people here I guess.

Thunderbird was really popular here a few years ago, when I first moved here the off sale kept cases right by the drive up window. Now evidently people have more money and light beer seems to be the product of choice.

At least the fortified wine had a pleasant taste, it's hard to figure out what the attraction of light beer is must be fashion.

Hehe, I honestly wouldn't have known anything about Mogen David if it wasn't for you crazy Lutherans over here at TCL. She could have pulled it out of the fridge and said that she'd paid $50 for the bottle, and I'd probably have believed her. (Except she didn't say that. She flat out told me that it was the 'cheap stuff that Grandma and Grandpa always used to have'!)

I should probably be careful when you aren't familiar with the wines. The Mad Dog is hard to even call a wine. It comes in "interesting" flavors and colors and they are always changing depending on what sells. They even have one which is a Jagermeister knock off with a deer head on it.

Anyway, when you distill alcohol, the first things that come aren't pure ethanol, instead it's all sorts of aromatics and methanol and so on. Distillers throw that away, or at least they say they do. My theory is they sell it to the fortified wine guys.

There just seems to be something more than wine and alcohol in them resulting in abherent behaviors. Of course no one can remember anything after turning the cap so it's not like you live ashamed of your actions or anything.

But to give you an idea, the most accurate description by a wine critic of Thunderbird I've ever heard was that it hits you with the taste of apples followed by the lingering aftertaste of aged dog urine.

I wouldn't recommend bringing home a bottle for mom.
