Around the turn of the 20th Century there was a divisiion between the conservative believers and the more liberal believers in the North American Baptist Convention. The conservative faction were unhappy because they were sending in their money for missions and it was being used to send Missionaries overseas who didn't believe in the Virgin-birth of Christ or the deity of Christ.

As a means of stressing how bad they believed the problem was a group of men produced a series of booklets, each dealing Biblically with a single doctrine. The series was called the Fundamentals of the Faith. I believe that there were 10 or 12 in all.

As a result of these booklets, and the name, the group that held these doctrines as the minimum requirements for service in missions came to be called Fundamentalists. Partly due to the resulting schism in the convention, which resulted in the formation of both the Conservative Baptist Convention and the General Association of Regular Baptists, the Fundamentalists came to be known as troublemakers or even militantly ridged in their thinking.

Since that time the term has been attached to any group that is viewed as militant in their beliefs and practices.

Jesus is a fundamentalist, and yes the term is used as a slur by many today, it's their veiled way of calling someone a ignorant, Bible believing, hillbilly, one of those pitiful folks that actually believes the Bible is true. I think we need a revival of fundamentalism.

If by "fundie," one means to refer to a person who believes that in the virgin birth and resurrection of Christ, exclusive salvation through Christ (apart from any false religion or god), and the inerrency of the Bible, then I certainly am a fundamentalist.

Unfortunately, fundamentalism is often used to refer to another type of Christian. It sometimes refers to people who are rude to unbelievers, unquestioningly support one political party (usually Republican, but not always), are unwaiveringly patriotic to America, believe in a very specific form of capitalistic economics, oppose social welfare, impose legalisms (no alcohol, dancing, etc.), and/or are racist. This type of fundamentalism most definitely does not describe me. Such ideology is political and social rather than religious, so I have no idea why the idea of Christian fundamentalism conjures up such images.

I am a fundamentalist. I believe that the Bible is the true, inerrant word of God and is to be taken literally. I do NOT believe that Jonah is a story, I believe this man was swallowed by a big fish. I do not believe the flood story is a myth, I believe that Noah and his family rode on a boat with animals. Perhaps with some miraculous storage assistance from God, but he rode that boat. I take my learning from the Bible.

I am in the minority where I live - most of the people I come into contact with are liberal christians - Jonah, Noah, and Adam and Eve are stories to them.

When these people say, with contempt, "Fundies", they are talking about zombies who take their learning from pastors who don't have enough education to be pastoring and certain television stations. People who are absolutely convinced that we are in the end times and there is going to be a pre-millenial rapture but couldn't even begin to tell you where to find it.

You got my curiosity going with the title, "Fundie"??

Initially I thought, "why is someone asking about those underwear made for couples on this forum?"

That said, I'm proud to be a fun pair of underwear!
groan.... lol
