  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Remember, this forum also includes Quakers, who do not practice water baptism, and many of them have a different view of the Bible. Quakers have many things in common with Baptists and Anabaptists. All are classified as Free Church Protestants - i.e. advocates of separation of church an d state on theological grounds. Anabaptists and Quakers are also historical peace churches.

I am confused as to how the Friends (Quaker is a rather derogatory name for them - it was used as an insult) got put under Baptist and Anabaptist? Anyone know?

Now more than ever I think a name change is needed, since Baptist and Anabaptist does NOT reflect who is a part of this "congregation".

I know when I first showed I thought it an eclectic collection. But Crazy Liz pointed out that there wasn't enough anabaptists nor quakers to justify a forum of their own. If I remember correctly, she made a great point about anabaptists getting much more exposure this way instead of being off in a forum that wouldn't get the traffic. I guess quakers got put in with us more because of the pacifist angle than anything. I've only ever come across more liberal quakers-wouldn't know if there is such a critter as a conservative quaker [friend] other than the guy on the oat box. Plain mennonites and plain quakers...interesting mix?

Baptists, Anabaptists, Friends and Brethren, along with the Scandinavian free churches like Covenant and Evangelical Free are all classified as Free Church Protestants. None baptize infants because they believe that Christian faith is voluntary on the part of each individual. For the same reason, all believe in separation of church and state on theological grounds.

However, some Baptists, Anabaptists and Brethren do not like the word "Protestant," since they associate the word only with Lutheran and Reformed churches who, along with the Catholics, persecuted the early Anabaptists and Baptists.

So we haven't been able to find any catchy title that describes all of us but doesn't use a word some of us find objectionable. The only one everyone considered accurate was "We don't splash no babies," but that sounds far too negative to be a forum name.
