I think what MbiaJc is trying to do here is open a discussion about our views of how one is saved and either gently correct or expand depending on the answers. One thing I've noted and appreciate about him is his penchant for asking what seems to be a simple question....

By admiting you are a sinner, cant save yourself, and accepting Jesus death on the cross as payment for your sins

Just choosing one answer here because it is not only representative but short, I see that several people have interpreted the question to mean, "What must I do to be saved?"

I haven't responded because I interpreted the word "how" differently -- from a more all-encompassing perspective. How does God do it? I don't have an answer to the OP's question. I may agree or disagree with several different answers. I pointed out one that definitely did not represent Baptist/Anabaptist/Friends theology, but I don't have an answer to the "How" question. I've studied what various theologians have said throughout history, and I find myself skeptical of detailed explanations of the atonement like Anselm's. The best answer I've seen here is:

I also agree with Seebs.

By God's grace, through Christ's blood.

Sword-In-Hand you are half right. Iollain you are wrong.

The blood of Jesus was shed for our sins.

We are saved by Grace through Faith.

We are saved by the Grace of God, through the Faith of Jesus Christ. Not our faith His Faith.

Romans says if you confess with our mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead you shall be saved.

We just believe in Jesus and confess that God raised Him from the dead.(Aberham believed God and it was counted to him for rightousness)

It is not our faith that saves us, but the faith of Jesus. All we need to do is believe and confess.

Eph 3:11 According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord:
Eph 3:12 In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him.

How are we saved? If you are still wondering (or if you ever wondered), just go back and reread the posts from #2 to here. Those posts are the truth from God, as found in His Word!!!!

Most welcome MbiaJc. I hope that I've interpreted your intent correctly my friend.

How one is saved is one of those questions that is paramount to understand correctly. I've recently been witness to two brothers who had been going to church for months ( or years! ) who had not grasped the concept. They thought that simply by going to church and living a good life was enough. That they were saved through thier own actions.

I was one of the mentioned above.

I'll spare the predestination stuff for another time. It's all about the Lord folks. He calls you. He saves you. He provides the Way.

Glory to our saviour Jesus and His awesome Love for us.

Ephesians 2:8-10
"For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them"

As many above my have stated, we are saved by Grace through Faith. But let's try to break it down a little more for 'seebs'. If we believe that Jesus: Was born from Mary; and Mary was a virgin; died a terrible death and was nailed on the cross because HE LOVES US; Rose from the dead 3 days later; cares SO much about every human being; loves us unconditionally. AND if we: repent from every sin and wrong-doing in our lives; accept Jesus and his sacrifice for us. If we say YOU ARE LORD!!!

Believe these things, (along with the fact that he created people and every thing) and after you accept Jesus, keep up your relationship. A lot of times it just seems like 'okay now, I've done what they said, "NOW What?"' If you REALLY study His word, you will find things that apply to your life. It's HARD! There are many times that I've felt this same way! Like, 'How does the Bible REALLY apply to my life?'

And 1 last thing: Make God your VERY BEST friend! Make him your confider, your comforter, and the [person] you go to with both your excitement and your troubles. He's always there for you, and he always cares.

Hope this has helped!
God bless,
doglover

Some of our Catholic and Orthodox brothers and sisters use the following saying that I think adds a very valuable dimension to the simplistic formula presented by most of evangelical Christianity.

I have been saved, I am being saved, I will be saved.
