No, I didn't think up this one, but it does ask us Americans to look beyond our own preferences for once.

Say what you like any war that is lead by popular vote is going to be a losing war. That is also true of any war you let congress lead. It is a president who makes leadership decisions on what the people seem to want who will be fighting an unwinable war and wasting lives and resources. The president as commander in chief should be ignoring popular opinion and making decisions based only on what will win with the least lives lost.

The media does impact our opinions of the president, though I think he is partially to blame. The president has indeed done some contemptible things, and can hardly be considered responsible for all the good things that supposedly ought to make us content.

Yet, president or no, Americans would still not be content. All that is proven by the depression, loneliness, and unhappiness rampant in the "first world", is that material things don't really bring happiness. Not even health and long life, or water. People bring happiness to each other, and we can bring happiness to ourself by doing meaningful work, but the wealthy status of America isolates us from both sources of comfort.

No surprise here. One can be happy about currently available material prosperity in America, and yet be unhappy with the war in Iraq, the loss of personal freedoms due to the war, the growth of government due to the war -- IOW the dangerous neo-con direction the President is setting America on.

Being unhappy with direction is not the same thing as being unhappy with the good things that exist now.

BTW, President Bush did not create material prosperity in America. He did not lift the standard of living. He only threatens what Americans do have, both materially and legally.

> 'What have Americans to be thankful for? More than any other people

...for Christians. For other religions, and for atheists, this freedom is not entirely secure.

political freedom

Unless you are merely suspected of being a terrorist.

social freedom

Only if don't happen to want to do anything that conservatives don't want you to do.

Our liberties are sacredly safeguarded by
> the Constitution of the United States

The neo-cons don't care about the Constitution. They will burn it in their fight against terrorists.

> I suggest we sit back and count our blessings for all we have.

And vote to keep it. Vote out the neo-cons!

Thank you

I'm not advertising anything. What would be the difference between somebody quoting an entire article or providing a link and what I'm doing? I'm posting my opinion by quoting someone who I happen to agree with on this point. I disagree that this is spam unless you show me proof that I'm trying to sell anything or represent the interests of an entity. If you call this spam, then posting an article link would be defined as such also.

jlujan69,

You're right, I apologize. I was using the term "spam" too broadly. I did not mean to accuse you of selling something or something. I was acusing you of forwarding the kind of unsolicited silly ideological emails I sometimes get. I should have said "please refrain from forwarding junk emails".

Dear jlujana69, I enjoyed reading your message, and I am not trying to comment, either for, or against. Yet one thing, I like to point out, when you blame the media for many things, I know what you mean, but imagine there were NO media at all? Imagine all the unfair and unjust, all the selfish and unloving happenings, which would surly take place, imagine they were never talked about, or even reported. I cannot help but shudder at the thought. I say this humbly and kindly, jlujana69, and send greetings. Emmy, sister in Christ.

What bothers me most about our country is that all the positive things we had 40yrs ago are now going in a full speed reverse.

I am just shocked at how people 30 years old and under, are so unpatriotic. Maybe it is because patriotism is rooted in the Bible.

Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people. (Prov.14:34)

What we are so unhappy about?

Happiness has a lot to do with someone's attitude and how they respond to circumstances than just the circumstances themselves.

That said, the article seems to imply happiness from a purely egoistic point of view. It is possible for someone to have everything and still be unhappy... due to awareness of those who don't.

No wonder the world loves the U.S. yet has a great disdain for its citizens.

Is that so? Wouldn't it be the exact reverse?

~

I'll not dispute the accusations of greed, remember that dissent is an American tradition.

That my friend is the difference between being unhappy with the way the government is run (which is merely likely to harm my comfort), and proposing revolution (which would be the result if I weren't able to work with the system in place).

It is my contention that Americans ability to be unsatisfied with incompetent government has as much to do with our success as a nation than the government in general.

i think the REAL problem is that too many people have confused radical jingoism with "patriotism."
