Congratulations soul-jah Hear is something that I wrote before the forum crashed and it is lost to the wind but I saved it and thought it would be applicable for you.

Prayer is the guts and pinnacle of our faith. it's were we see god, its were we come into his presence. worship and thanks giving are a main part of prayer. it should be the start of any prayer unless there is sin waying us down. thanks giving and worship always bring us into the presence of god. once we come into the presence of god , our faith is amplified and we can commune with god. these are the times were our faith is built and our awareness of who and what god is becomes a reality. this is were we are filled with his holiness and holiness brings righteousness. from there we can walk with god and in god in a spirit of supplication and consistent interaction all day. We can remain in the presence of god as long as we walk in his grace. we walk in thanks giving and humble reliance and never take credit were credit isn’t due and we offer all we do up to the lord and through that, we remain in his presence through his grace , all day long. It feels like he gives you favour to all who we speak to, he makes everything we do easy and accurate, he covers us from offence and gives us patience and longsuffering. we can walk in a state of prayer and be in prayer all day long.

we must walk by his grace. if we winged and wine full of complaining, that will cut across his grace because it is the opposite to the spirit of thanks giving and if we take credit were credit is not due, that will also cut across his grace because it is not in the spirit of thanks giving either. to walk by the grace of god we must be in a spirit of thanks giving and a spirit of thanks giving is in permanent contact with god at all times. this is prayer without seising that Paul speaks of I believe.
there is so much that can be looked at and from so many different angles and it would have to be "THE MOST IMPORTANT " subject in any Christians life. it never comes down to how well we understand scripture or how high up in the church we are or how good a preacher we are or any of that, it all comes down to weather we spend time with god and how much time we spend with him. he waits at the door for us to open it and ask him in, he waits by the curb when we go into work, he waits by our bed hoping to commune with us, he is forever watching over us but if we come to him, and walk and live in him, he will willingly go before us and prepare the way before us and we will follow him and go after him and wait for him. If we all knew how much god loves us we would come to him always and live in him daily.
We go to church to try to get right with god.
We read our bible to try to be right with god.
we formally pray as though he doesn't hear.
we keep our Christian friends.

Non of this means anything without knowing the spirit of god through being in the presence of god. when we want to get right with god, the only way is to seek him and consult him and submit to him. all these other things can only encourage us to do this. It is the prayer and supplication that is were a personal relationship and strong faith come from. in the presence of the lord is the only true freedom we have. I believe that a lot of the church is missing this kind of interaction with god. When you ask a Christian if god speaks to them or shows them things and they look at you strange and say, "No" of course not. Well, they are lacking this kind of relationship even though they go to church, read there bible, have there formal prayers and have all Christian friends. they have managed to do all this and managed to stay away from god in it all. We have to be open to god and able to believe that he is real. It is something we first have to believe. Nothing in god can be done without faith.

A way to get closer to God? I like to go back to a good old analogy for these questions.

"Garbage in, garbage out. Sin in, sin out."

If we focus our minds on things that are not of God, then we will be pushed away from Him by our own choices. There are things that God loves and there are things that God hates. If we spend time listening, watching, reading, talking, or being involved in the things that God hates, we are not going to be close to God as our sin will keep pushing us away. Remember He is a holy God that sin can not stand in front of.

The reverse is true.

"God in, God out."

If we spend our time focusing on God and the things that He loves, His fruits will be present in our life and flow from our life. He will be able to use us more and better when we keep ourselves pure and focused on Him.

We are to take up our cross daily. Lay down all those things that can pull you down. We are to stay away from even the appearance of evil. God will deliever us from evil. We live in a would bent on seeking out evil. But God will and does honour our free will if we seek out evil, we will find it.

It all comes down to how much are you willing to give to God? Everything. Every area of your life? Or just those things that are easy to give? God doesn't want just part of us, He wants all of us.

When we give everything to Him, we will grow closer to Him and the fruits of the Spirit will be ever present in our lives and we will be effective for the kingdom of God.

I am also curious, how does one go about receiving the Holy Ghost? I've been a Christian for years and I've been taught that believers have the Spirit once they believe. However, early on in the book of Acts there is a story of a group of believers that did not receive the Spirit once they believe, they had "just" been baptized in the name of Jesus. So anyway, all of this confuses me a little bit. So if you can, would you please explain how you received the Holy Ghost. Thanks, Godbless.

He may be referring to the gift of speaking in tongues, and the way it is received is to ask.
Paul said that He spoke in tongues and that it was a way to edify oneself, but that it had to be interpreted if it was to edify a congragation at chuirch.
Jesus said that He would baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire, and the baptizm of water was referred to as John's baptizm.
The evidence of baptizm of the Holy Spirit can be speaking in tongues, as it happened several times in the early church, but the gifts given to the believer during baptizm of the Holy Spirit does not necessarily have to be the gift of tongues.
Personally, I want everything I can get that God has to give and the gift of tongues is considered a lesser gift than prophesy.

1 Corinthians 14:2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

Acts 10:4 ¶ While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.
45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.
46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,
47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?
Acts 11:15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning.
16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.
17 Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God?

You are understandably enthusiastic to put your now Christ filled body to good use. You can use your gifts of the spirit every moment of the day, by doing as God would require you to. Whatever your day requires, do it for the Glory of God. Being of the spirit does not have to mean that you must suddenly begin to prophecy, speak in tongues etc...you have the gift of the spirit residing in you so that God will be reflected in your daily life.

If you COME ON OVER to the Charasmatic forum there is a bunch of us who would be very happy to explain to you how to use this new gift. I suggest over there because we can discuss uninterrupted by those who don't believe this still exists.
