Favorite Version of Windows?

Win2k is the only operating system I've ever used that's both stable and functional for what I want to do. When we upgraded to WinXP at work (pre SP2), it was so buggy and unstable that the company reformatted our machines with Win2k at no charge. WinXP worked even worse for our business management software than WinME, if you can imagine that.

For ease of use and installation, XP.
For the last version that didnt treat you like a criminal, 2K.
For the best gaming rig, 98.
For the most nerdy, tweaking, driver installing - NT4.

Use Linux. =D

Definitely our current OS XP Pro has been our favorite. It's been the most stable one for us - it's been so nice to say goodbye to the BSOD!

Definitely XP Pro. It is far more stable and versatile than any version of Windows ever released. It is the ONLY true NT kernel based o/s that is a true multimedia and gaming o/s. Nothing else that MS has offered has even come close.

Sorry, what? I can walk into a lot of stores and buy one copy of Enterprise Server and run it on a 4- or 8-way server. I'm not sure what you're referring to

Microft generally has one of two types of licensing on the software : per user or per processor.

Windows licensing works based on per server or per seat. Per server defines the amount of simultaneous connections that are allowed. Per seat defines that each client connecting requires its own CAL (Client Access License).

The number of processors comes into play with the different versions of Windows Server. Standard supports 1 to 4 processors. Enterprise supports 1 to 8 processors, Datacenter supports 8 to 64 processors, and Web supports 1 to 2.

I love w2k pro. XP patronizes you, hides critical features, and has a variety of other problems, though it's good. The other main personal option -- ME -- is just a stinking trash heap that no one should ever touch.

Why use Windows for a server? So expensive!!! No where near the efficiency of other OSs. Plus, with Apache 2 and MySQL (to name a couple) for free or cheap . . .

WinXP Version 2002 (Pre-SP1), although Win95 (1st edition) would be my second choice. We never had problems with one program crash cascading into several others like our 98 did (of course, our 98 was also a Compaq...maybe that has something to do with it).

You forgot to put "none of the above" for us Mac people. However, I do have a PC with Windoze 2000 on it. Use it regularly too. The Mac runs circles around it. Of course.
