I do believe that there are often purely spiritual causes for depression. However, there are also some purely physical causes for it as well. Certain medications are known to cause it, and once the person stops taking them, then the depression ceases. Depression is an extremely complicated issue. To say that depression is only an evil spirit is incredibly simplistic, medically uninformed, and could cause serious damage to someone who is seeking healing from depression and already feels like a million things are wrong with them.

I would also like to say that, while yes! there are many "Christians" who are not, there is virtually no benefit in trying to figure out who they are. We're instructed to guard against false teaching, not against false believers. Indeed, God's Word says that many will approach Christ on the last day fully believing that they will enter into Heaven. I think we need to be searching our own hearts for evidence of the Spirit's fruit instead of analyzing our neighbors for it.
