What is the difference between faith and hope? Both of these in the Bible have different definitions in the Bible than how we use them today. Both are more confident than how we use them today. Hope is not like I have hope that UT (Texas) will win the national championship in football next year. No it is a expentant knowing that it will occur. (which I really can'y say about anything UT does) And faith is also more confident that what we use today. Below are small parts of the definitions of both from the Nelson's Bible dictionary.

So what is the real difference between faith and hope and how do they interact with eachother? Does one come before the other? Is one necessary for the other? Also does love then come from these two? So is it a progression in 1 cor. 13? Faith, hope, and then love?

FAITH
A belief in or confident attitude toward God, involving commitment to His will for one's life.

Hebrews 1:1 Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.

HOPE

Confident expectancy. In the Bible, the word hope stands for both the act of hoping <Rom. 4:18; 1 Cor. 9:10> and the thing hoped for <Col. 1:5; 1 Pet. 1:3>. Hope does not arise from the individual's desires or wishes but from God, who is Himself the believer's hope: "My hope is in You" <Ps. 39:7>. Genuine hope is not wishful thinking, but a firm assurance about things that are unseen and still in the future <Rom. 8:24-25; Heb. 11:1,7>.

Romans 10
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

Great verse Cougan,

If hope can be explained as seeing a chance of things becoming better, than faith would be knowing that it will become better, and once your fears are diminished than the Lord can teach you to love.

An example would be loving a landlord whose about to foreclose on your house. If you truly KNOW that no matter what you're taken care of, than it is much easier to have love for the person, as oppossed to when you were in constant fear that he was to take away your livelihood.

I guess what I'm saying is that to me, hope always seemed like wanting things to happen where as faith was knowing they would happen, and when you are without worry then you are free to love. Bill

"Observe we are not given a new soul, but new powers in the sould we already have. Our intellect is given a new access to truth by faith: now it can accept God as the supreme source of truth, whose word is final. The will receives two virtues. One is hope, by which it desires God in the certainty that he is attainable. The other is charity, by which it loves God. These three are called the theological virtues because their object is God; they relate the soul directly to him."(Theology for Begginers-F.J.Sheed pg.139)

A sin against faith is unbelief, a sin against hope is presumption and a sin against charity is (???).

Correct me if I'm wrong but...

Knowledge belief of the past...
Fatih belief for the present...
Hope belief for the future.

Sound about right?

That makes sense but I would say faith would be for the future also.

The concept of faith is not simply believing God, it is a living trust in His promises. Faith is not mearly blind faith, it is faith rooted in evidence.

God Bless
