Thread: A Soul for a Secret
Name: Ethan Vassar
Gender: Male
Age: 30
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 180 pounds.
Occupation: Colonel of Brynne's armed forces and personal bodyguard to Governess Siledur
Appearance: Ethan mostly takes after his father, who was of Arabic descent. His hair is black as night, worn slightly longer than most men's and, since it had a slight wave to it, seems unkempt when it's really not, sticking out in places it shouldn't, especially around his ears, forehead, and neck. His eyes are a dark chocolate brown, black in low light, sharp and intelligent. He keeps his face clean shaven, though it's not for lack of trying to grow facial hair. However, all he has ever been able to manage was fuzzy scruff here and there and gave up, shaving instead. Consequently, he never gets five o'clock shadow and the skin on his face is quite smooth, giving his visage a somewhat boyish quality. He's not particularly handsome, but does have a nice smile, which he rarely shows in full. His skin is naturally deep tan, smooth, with a few scars here and there over his body, one in particular on one side of his abdomen actually presenting as two scars; one on his front and one on his back where he was stabbed with a shortblade through to the other side in his early twenties. His father's family from the Arab desert also had a tradition of tattooing the males with the family name in the Arabic language on the back, over the right shoulder blade. Though his father died when he was young, Ethan still insisted on this tradition and carries the tattoo. He's tall and muscular, but with more of an athletic build instead of a hulking mass like some of the men under his command.
Unlike his mother, Ethan prefers to wear darker clothes, mostly gray, black, and dark brown…though he will occasionally sport a dark green or dark blue. When on duty, he wears leather armor, dyed black, as he likes to have free movement. He wears no jewelry and is most often seen with black leather wraps around his hands and wrists. He doesn't care for the straight sword, but instead prefers a curved blade, a katana, which he keeps with him at all times.
Personality: Ethan is one of those men who is best described by the words, "strong, silent type." He maintains proper reserve and decorum when he is around those of higher class or when in the presence of a superior officer. Not because he is shy or believes himself inferior. He simply has a strong sense of loyalty, propriety, and chivalry, giving those people the respect that society says they deserve. He is not, however, one who rolls over and takes abuse. No, he demands respect in return, especially from the men under his command. He can be loud and forceful when need be, though always in a controlled and confident way, and is not afraid to go on the offensive, or to defend those who have his loyalty. Because of that, he can sometimes come across as cold and stubborn, perhaps even a little brutal. In general, however, he has a good heart, a sense of humor, and a very gentle spirit, though he tends to hide his feelings and emotions, making him difficult to read at times.
Background: (For his childhood history, see his mother's profile: Ciara Vassar) Ethan had always wanted to do something different with his life, didn't want to live his life the way others told him to, wanted to do something great for Rhytium. His mother, however, wanted him to become a wealthy businessman, like his father. When he turned seventeen, Ethan went against his mother's wishes and attempted to join the Olumcai, Rhytium's most elite fighting force. He was rejected, however, on the basis that he didn't have enough experience, and his mother then insisted that since he'd had his chance and it hadn't worked, he now continue his education. So, grudgingly, he entered the university in Floresco, working towards earning his degree. But he found he couldn't stand the scholastic life and didn't want to live the rest of his life behind a desk, managing a business.
Two years later, he decided to leave the university and joined Lord Arnau's army instead, much to his mother's chagrin. There he served faithfully for ten years, rising in rank to the post of 2nd Lieutenant. He had only been in this post for a few months when there came an opening in Brynne's military for the position of Colonel, one for which his mother, trusted advisor to Governess Siledur, recommended him. He left Lord Arnau's army and took the post, desiring to turn the men into a respectable fighting force for Brynne and Governess Siledur, much the same as the Olumcai was for Floresco and Lord Arnau. If he couldn't be part of Rhytium's elite soldiers, as had been his first dream, then he would create his own. It has been a year since he took the post and while he is on the way to doing just that, his progress has been slowed due to the fact that there are many people in Brynne, within the military and without, that believe the only reason he got the position was because of his mother's recommendation and not because of his skills or experience and he is having to constantly prove that he is up for the task. In addition to his duties as head of Brynne's armed forces, Ethan is also charged with the personal protection of the Governess, and spends much of his time in her presence.
