Yes. The CDC protocol uses Trizol. Our lab gets better results with AVL (with a little ethanol thrown in now, to make sure the little nasties are really, truly dead), both for PCR and (especially) for sequencing.

That makes a lot of sense given what you and your colleague wrote in the op-ed. RT-PCR is a really accurate and sensitive screen, but it isn't something your usual clinical lab can run in less than an hour. I imagine that they do not have sample tubes prefilled with Trizol, either.

Of course, it would be a lot cooler if they could use CHISAM buffer. Nothing like yelling out "SHAZAM!!!" right in the middle of an extraction.

The CDC has a patent on Ebola (EboBun).. They say they "generally" patent viruses for the common good. Better them than some random company
The patent on the virus itself has probably been nullified by the Myriad Genetics decision.
