  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Don't bring everything you own because you'll have NOWHERE to put it.

Bring stackable or slide-under-the-bed storage bins, they'll come in handy

If you don't have a car, find contacts that do because it can be hard to find a way to the grocery store, clothing store, home, etc.

Always have food in your room because sometimes it'll get so hectic that you don't have time to eat in the cafeteria.

Bring plenty of tissue

Bring lots of laundry detergents, towels and bed linens. you'd be surprised what can happen when you least expect. (I never saw that trash can explosion coming)

If you're taking a computer make sure you have floppy (or zip disks), ink cartridges, paper and whatever else your computer requires.

Don't take all your clothes at once. Take your summer clothes first semester and then start switching to your winter gear when you go home for thanksgiving and christmas.

Make sure you have a good alarm clock. sometimes you'll get so tired that your cell phones alarm clock won't do.

If you don't have a cell phone and plan to go to school in another city/state, make sure you have a phone card. A lot of schools have their phones set up that they don't allow long distance calls unless you have a phone card

No matter what the people in the bookstore say, the books will always be cheaper on amazon or e-bay.

If you go to school in a rural area, bring bottled water because often their water will be too hard (full of minerals) to drink. That's the case where I go to school. The water has a odd taste because the surrounding town is too small to require a chemical treatment plant that most big cities have.

too be continued later...

I don't know how your dorms are set up, but I found that it was nice to have a small fridge and a microwave in your room. Sometimes you just want something hot to eat or snack on and the cafe isn't open. Ramen noodles are a great doorm room snack. I also LOVED my george foreman grill in the dorm. It was great for grilled cheese sandwiches for a quick lunch or supper when things got crazy!

It's always nice to have snacks that you can take to class for those days that you don't have a lunch break!

We had 4 girls to a bathroom, so it was nice to have a standing shelf for in the shower so each of us could have room for our things.

You may also need a shower curtain.

It is also a good idea to find out who your roommates are going to be, if you have them and divide up some of the things you all will need and can share, mainly the bigger things. (ALL of you won't need to take a microwave, etc).

Here quarters were needed for laundry. 75 cents for the washer and 75 cents for the dryer... it's probably not like that everywhere, but if it is where you are going, make sure you have plenty of them!

In the dorms, well, even in my apt. I find it easy to miss home. This maybe "girly" but i have things to decorate my room to make it more homey!

Some medicines may be useful at times too. Just the basics though, like tylenol, if you use them!

If you are a coffee drinker, that is useful for those late night study sessions!

Cleaning supplies, trash can/trash bags

I'll let you know if I think of anything else!

Well, I was going to add my 2 cents, but those lists are really good!

Other than that, music is a great thing to have, cause you never know what kind of radio stations will be at the college you attend.

Find out what the rules are in order to hang things on the wall (our walls are brick)...if you can't nail, hot glue works wonders, and so do 3M hooks

And if you are planning to eat in your room, its nice to have plastic silverware/paper plates to eat on, and easy to throw away

Oh I forgot. Always have medicines on hand. Illnesses travel around campus like wild fire.
I recommend always having:
Tylenol Cold and Sinus
Advil pain relief
Midol (or whatever you use as needed)
Aspirin
Theraflu
If you're athletic:
Icy Hot
Alieve
Epson Salt
Band aids (Assorted sizes)
Antibiotic cream
Alcohol
Peroxide

May seem a little extensive, but you'll never regret having it.

I was on the teen forum, when another one struck me. If people come up to you and ask you what you want for graduation (and some people will) tell them bath towels and hangers. I never realized how expensive a body towel or a ten pack of hangers were until I had to buy them myselves. Also you need some bowls, plates, cups, forks, spoons, etc. Paper towels, dish towels, and dish washing liquid are essentials too.

Hey there... I am a dorm mom for the high school that is in the same building as the college I attend. One of the biggest complaints I have from the highschool kids, is that their roomates snore/talk in their sleeep. Earplugs... they would be a great investment. Not just for at nite, but also during the day if you have time off and want to catch up on some sleep (alhtough I don't know what sleep is anymore) they come in handy to block out noise on the floor.
I love dorm life! It's been great so far! Only 4 years left of it!

God Bless!
Jenn
