I guess the matters fall now to the individual states to see if each of their laws also fail the test.

I think it is pretty silly that it is unconstitutional for the Federal Government to define their own definitions they will use in providing benefits. I could see how providing the benefit is unconstitutional but I can't see how defining a term is unconstitutional.

Actually the Court only ruled that a portion of DOMA was unconstitutional. The Defense of Marriage Act has two main sections. The section that was struck down defined marriage in federal laws as between a man and a woman. The other provision shields states from having to recognize gay marriages from other states. That portion remains in force, although I hope that it will also be declared unconstitutional in the future.

Fail who's test, the Supreme Commands. They already showed they don't care about the states or the voters decisions on such matters because they also tore down propisition 8 in California which the people voted into law.

DOMA is now the defense of marriage actions between man and women, man and man, women and women. Federal Government can't control the definition of 'marriage' but the States still can determine who can marry.

Prop 8 ruling by Supreme Court simply upheld what the lower courts ruled.
When defining marriage States can not single out the homosexual. But the States can still determine whom can be married.
However, some 30 States still outlaw SSM's and that is still their privileged.

Since the issue now seems to have turned to the definiton of marriage, what definition would you all like to see in place, either in your state or nationally, if any?

The USA is going to lose some of its protection. I expect we will see an increase of natural disasters.

I don't have a problem with civil marriage being between two consenting adults regardless of their sex. However, I don't think that any religious institution--be it Christian or otherwise--should be required to perform a marriage that would be in violation of the tenents of that religion.

i agree, the melting of the poles and green house effect will cause more tragedy. But i don't see a connection to DOMA.

At this moment churches would not be forced to perform same sex marriages, nor is it clear if the rest of the states that currently ban SSM's would have their bans overturned in the near future, as an act of federal caprice, in light of today's decision by the SCOTUS. However on a local talk radio show I was listening to on the way home tonight, there was one caller, who hoped the federal government would force the acceleration of all states to perform SSM's, and the caller also opined that any religious groups that would refuse to officiate a gay wedding, should be charged with hate crimes. Make of it what you will.
